NEW CSII/CIPC REPORT
Looking Forward 2014: Immigrant Contributions to California 
CSII worked with the California Immigrant Policy Center to release this report, which digs into the economic, civic, and other impacts of immigrants in California. Interested in learning about how immigrants compare to the native born population in different regions? Déjà Vu: Op-ed on L.A.'s Proposed Minimum Wage Increase

Following Mayor Garcetti's announcement of a proposed minimum wage increase for L.A., Manuel Pastor looks back at previous wage increases.  In this Huffington Post entry, Pastor evaluates the reactions he has heard time and again and what the research shows, and suggests analysis from a broader perspective. 

"But just as in 1987 when those opposed to progress suggested that an extra 90 cents an hour was likely to shipwreck the California economy, it might be good for the rest of us to take a breath, consider the research and the record, and have a more productive conversation about the best ways to address inequality and make sure that work does indeed pay."

NEW BOOK

"Paradise Transplanted: Migration and the Making of California Gardens" 

Congratulations to CSII's Associate Director Pierrette Hondagneu-Sotelo on her latest book, which delves into stories of gardens, migration, money, and what it means to be home. Through archival research and extensive interviews, she studies gardens through new lenses: as power structures, as social spaces, and as welcoming places of growth and development. 

"A new book by Pierrette Hondagneu-Sotelo of [the Department of ] Sociology provides insights into ways diverse global migration and garden landscapes shape California’s social world."

Mark your calendars for this year's National Immigrant Integration Conference (NIIC) , co-hosted by our friends at CHIRLA here in Los Angeles from December 14th - 16th.
