10 TIPS FOR THE LICENSURE EXAM
| |
Spring semester is in full swing and many of you are in various stages of the licensure process. Take a look at our newsletter from last fall where we answered many of your FAQs. As always, we strongly recommend that you go through the NYU Silver Licensing Guide.
For those of you who will be taking the exam soon, here are some tips to think about as you prepare.
| |
| Tip #2 → Have a plan Create a study schedule that reflects your learning style. Many people who have taken the test have generally studied 1-2 hours a day for 2-3 months prior to the test, but this is going to look different for everyone and their specific needs.
| |
| Tip #3 → Don't do it on your own and use multiple methods of studyingThere are various approaches to studying other than a test prep book. Attending a bootcamp, prep course, and/or reviewing flashcards can help keep you accountable. Don’t forget to lean on your peers; study groups can provide clarity, support, and motivation to keep you going.
| |
| Tip #4 → Review the ASWB content outline and the knowledge, skills, abilities (KSAs) statement for the Masters Examination. Use it as a guide! The exam tests 27% on human development, diversity, and behavior in the environment, 24% on assessment and intervention planning, 24% on interventions with clients/client systems, and 25% on professional relationships, values, and ethics.
| |
|
Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs Problem solving process (engagement, assessment, intervention, termination)
Code of Ethics Stages of change
Theories of human development (Erikson, Piaget, Kohlberg)
| |
| Tip #6 → Look for qualifiers in questions (best/first) and when you read each of the responses, put the qualifying word in front of it to ensure that you are focusing on what is importantTry utilizing these acronyms: “FAREAFI” (in this order) is most useful for FIRST/NEXT type test questions and “AASPIRINS” is most helpful for questions that ask what is the BEST (or MOST reasonable) option/plan of action.
| |
| Tip #7 → Remember the exam measures book knowledge rather than experience
Remember this is the same exam for every social worker in the country; don’t answer questions as a social worker from your particular city or state.
| |
| Tip #8 → Practice time management and do not leave anything blank You have 4 hours to answer 170 exam questions; practice managing your time accordingly and do not leave any questions unanswered.
| |
| Tip #9 → Manage your anxietyTaking this kind of exam can bring up all sorts of stress and anxiety. Make sure to take breaks, drink water, and take care of yourself as needed.
| |
| Tip #10 → You got this! You’ve put in all the work. Trust yourself, and know that you’ve done everything you can. Make sure to fuel up and get some rest before the exam.
