The Randall D. Smith Fund for Business Journalism, launched by family and friends of professor Randy Smith, aims to support students at Missouri Business Alert and the New York Program. Smith served as the Donald W. Reynolds Chair in Business Journalism, and taught nearly 600 students during his tenure. With support from the School of Journalism’s friends and fellow alumni, he hopes the fund will extend that legacy into the future. Learn more here.

Current doctoral candidate Lisa Krantz was part of the Washington Post team that won a Pulitzer Prize earlier this month for a series of stories about mass shootings involving the AR-15. Krantz was honored alongside several alums who also work at the Washington Post: Tim Elfrink, B.J. ’05; Amy Fiscus, B.J. ’03; and Monique Woo, B.J. ‘18, M.A. ’20. Professor Amy Simons is the winner of the 2024 Provost’s Faculty Mentoring Award, one of the esteemed Provost’s Awards for University Citizenship. Simons, a nationally recognized leader in innovative and interactive teaching, is the course coordinator for J1400: Applied Projects for Journalism and Strategic Communication, but this award, which came with a $1,000 prize, singled out her mentorship of professional colleagues at the School.

Students displayed their multifaceted talents during Show Me Research Week in April, with seven students named as finalists in the Visual Arts and Design Showcase for works ranging from videos to graphic design in advertising. Read about the students who took home university-wide awards for art and research, demonstrating the wide variety of applications available to students with skills in communication and design.

KBIA-FM recently won four regional Edward R. Murrow Awards for Podcast, Excellence in Innovation, Excellence in Sound and Continuing Coverage, the most awards for any organization in its region. Last year, the NPR-member station won three regional awards and went on to win a national Murrow Award in the Digital Category. This year’s national awards will be announced in August.
