How we're going back to school this year

At Upstream Arts, our greatest strength has always been using the creative arts to nurture community and practice social emotional learning in ways that uplift everyone's agency. Now, we're finding that this knowledge, traditionally thought of as "soft skills," is actually key to the success of distance learning spaces. "It's about taking the time to build community," says Julie Guidry, Upstream Arts' Executive Director, "because in the absence of community, access to learning becomes much more challenging."
In the past month, our Staff and Teaching Artists have been in high production mode creating a brand new series of professional development videos for educators in the Minneapolis, Fridley, and Milwaukee Public Schools. The response has been overwhelmingly positive. "You guys rock!" said one Mpls Special Education Teacher, "I just finished watching and wish I had the whole day with my team to discuss what each point could look like in our virtual class." We're proud to be of service to our teachers, and hope that everyone going back to school today finds the connection and the community that they've been craving.

New Disability Reading List for kids and adults

The whimsical, Minneapolis-based bookstore Wild Rumpus has created a wonderful list of children and youth books featuring characters with disabilities, characters that are neurodiverse and/or are written by authors with disabilities. These books have been intentionally curated to showcase stories where people with disabilities show up as their whole, complex selves. Wild Rumpus has also included a book list for adults by creators/authors with disabilies.
We encourage you to check it out, and order your books from local independant bookstores like Wild Rumpus!

Become a Steady Eddy

What's an eddy? It's a bend in a river where the water flows in a circular motion. In her earlier days as a river guide, Executive Director Julie Guidry looked for eddies as "a place where I would survey the landscape and understand how to set everyone up for success." We're navigating unknown waters these days, which is why monthly donors are more important now than ever. These "Steady Eddies" provide us with reliable independent funds that enable us to plan ahead and respond to the emergent needs of our community, all while providing a continual source of employment for our Teaching Artists.
You can become a Steady Eddy for as little as $5/month. Last week, 3 new people joined our Steady Eddies. Will you join us this week?
Count me in
Warm hands for all you do,
Julie, Matt, Bree and all of us at Upstream Arts
