Why New Student Orientation Matters The transition to college can be disorienting. Students move from the familiar routine of high school into a new and unfamiliar environment. It’s a big change for their families, too.
Johns Hopkins University recognizes this adjustment that students and families are facing and supports them by offering orientation sessions before the official start of freshman year. To learn more about the benefits of orientation, follow the link below.

Coming Soon: President's Day of Service
The Center for Social Concern will host President’s Day of Service on September 21. President’s Day of Service is a great opportunity for your Blue Jay to join their peers, staff, faculty, and alumni in service alongside various community organizations, local nonprofits, and government agencies throughout Baltimore City. Thousands of students have participated in this beloved tradition and have formed lasting connections with both our community partners and other students on campus. With hundreds of student participants, we’re able to contribute a combined 1,500 hours of service in one day. Johns Hopkins is a proud inhabitant of Baltimore and President’s Day of Service is one way we give back to our community and challenge students to think critically about their role in Baltimore, and how they can jumpstart their civic engagement career at the university.

Connor Scott Named Acting Vice President for Security at Johns Hopkins
Connor Scott, a seasoned first responder, emergency manager, and public administrator who has served as the chief of staff in the Office of the Vice President for Security for the past year, has stepped into the role of acting vice president for security for Johns Hopkins University and Johns Hopkins Medicine while the university launches a national search for the position. The role became vacant due to the recent departure of Melissa Hyatt, who was sworn in as Baltimore County's police chief in June.
Scott is overseeing security operations for Johns Hopkins Medicine hospitals and facilities in Maryland; Washington, D.C.; and Florida; and for university campus safety and security worldwide except at the Applied Physics Laboratory. As chief of staff, Scott was involved in all aspects of the day-to-day security operation at Johns Hopkins and instrumental in the development and implementation of a number of programs, processes, and initiatives, including a new student advisory committee for security, enhancement of the security officer training program, and best-practice research and policy development.

Your Student's J-Card
Upon your student’s arrival at Hopkins, they will receive their J-Card—one of the most important pieces of plastic they’ll own during their time here. It’s a student ID: but also a means of accessing services and events all over campus. It’s a key: The J-Card is used to access on-campus housing, the library, Recreation Center and other campus spaces. It’s a meal card: Students swipe their J-Card at dining halls or Charles Street Market to use their meal plan or Dining Dollars. It’s a debit card: You or your student can add money to the J-Cash account to use on campus, at the bookstore, or other local restaurants and shops.
