Dear Community of Joy "The leading causes of death..." We are familiar with that expression. But I wonder, what are the leading causes of life? In the lives of people and organizations, what are the causes of life? I am convinced that we do not learn about life by studying death.

A friend recently introduced me to a book called, Leading Causes of Life. Exactly what are the leading causes of life? Gary Gunderson and Larry Pray identify five: connection, coherence, agency, blessing and hope. Where these qualities abide, people will thrive. We need to be connected to each other, have a clear sense of purpose, the ability to act, the power of blessing and being blessed by God, and the hope that God is working among us.

I heard a "life" story this past Sunday. One of our men was running late driving in from downtown on Wednesday night trying to make it in time for our church supper. Only when he made it to campus did he realize he did not have money. He asked a total stranger on campus if we have an ATM machine. The stranger said, "No, but how can I help." "Well I need to buy supper. Does the church take credit cards for supper?" They walked together to Fellowship Hall East to ask. When he discovered that we only take cash, the stranger said, "Let me buy your supper." He pulled out $7 and paid. When the man who told me the story turned to thank the stranger for his generosity and get his name or number to pay him back, the man was gone. I don't know who did that but God does. I don't know who it was but I am not surprised. Now let me ask you: who was blessed more, the one who received or the one who gave? Do this and you will live. So will others.

Serving joyfully with you,

Duane
