Acts 22: 23 - 29
23 As they were shouting and throwing off their cloaks and flinging dust into the air, 24 the commander ordered that Paul be taken into the barracks. He directed that he be flogged and interrogated in order to find out why the people were shouting at him like this. 25 As they stretched him out to flog him, Paul said to the centurion standing there, “Is it legal for you to flog a Roman citizen who hasn’t even been found guilty?”
26 When the centurion heard this, he went to the commander and reported it. “What are you going to do?” he asked. “This man is a Roman citizen.” 27 The commander went to Paul and asked, “Tell me, are you a Roman citizen?” “Yes, I am,” he answered. 28 Then the commander said, “I had to pay a lot of money for my citizenship.” “But I was born a citizen,” Paul replied. 29 Those who were about to interrogate him withdrew immediately. The commander himself was alarmed when he realized that he had put Paul, a Roman citizen, in chains.

New International Version (NIV)
Do you know who I am? I love the story of the usher who was helping a lady find a seat in church. He told her that the preacher was not a very good preacher. "Do you know who I am?" she asked. "No," the usher answered. "I am the Pastor's mom." "Do you know who I am?" asked the usher." "No," answered the mom. "Good," said the usher as he hurried away.

When the Roman soldiers prepared to beat Paul he asked them if it was legal to beat a Roman citizen. To that point, they did know that Paul was born a citizen of Rome. Even putting shackles on him was against the law. They changed course and did not beat Paul.

We never know whom we are dealing with in life. But we know that everyone is created in God's image. God wants everyone to come to repentance. Each person we meet may become a child of God. This should give us pause as we talk to them and about them.

Paul would write to the church in Philippi, "Our citizenship is in heaven." One church chose the motto:  "where everyone is someone and Jesus Christ is Lord." Since Jesus Christ is Lord, we should treat others well. We will all answer to a higher Authority than the government.

Pray with me:
Father, help us to handle others with care. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
Our Monday through Friday devotionals will start in the book of Acts this year.  We will not hurry through the book.  We want to see what the Holy Spirit did in the early church so that we may discern what he is doing in us and through us.  Join us for these devotionals as we learn together about our King and his Kingdom in the world.

We also invite you to join us as we read through the Bible. Copies of the reading plan are available at Tallowood Baptist Church, or download your copy here:
