Anti-Racism Work for Home or Groups:
Follow Along with our Governing Board and Staff!
Our Fellowship’s governing board set a goal for our community to work toward an “end to discrimination and systemic racism within ourselves, our congregation, and the world around us.” As such, they have embarked on group learning about the ways racism can show up in our lives and our work, even without our intending it. Last year they read and discussed a book together.
This year they’re learning about the characteristics of white supremacy culture (sometimes shortened to WSC), based on scholarship by Kenneth Jones and Tema Okun. Our Fellowship staff team decided to follow their lead. They too will read about and discuss how racism shows up in our work, and how we can be intentional about identifying and maybe even changing some of the default norms of Fellowship culture. Members of the board and staff have made a commitment to think about one or two of these WSC characteristics and their helpful antidotes each month.
You're invited to join us! All you need to do is keep reading the Scroll. Once a month, we will share a short reading and a few thought-provoking questions. You might like to ponder the material on your own; share it at home with friends and family; and/or discuss it in Fellowship committees and groups in which you participate.
If you're interested in another way to engage racism and anti-racism, don’t forget about White People’s Work on Tuesday, September 24th with Rev. Christina and Fellowship member Brian Looker. If you have additional ideas, questions, concerns, or comments, please don’t hesitate to reach out to Rev. Christina or Rev. Leah.
Get started right away by learning about this month's WSC characteristic of perfectionism HERE

Long Haul by Rev. Leah Hart-Landsberg
It’s easy to burnout in our current society, due to grief, trauma, worry, injustice, overstimulation, and more. So how do we keep showing up? The Age of Overwhelm: Strategies for the Long Haul by Laura van Dernoot Lipsky suggests that sometimes doing less is more. Whether or not you read the book or attended an all Fellowship discussion, join us for a service with practical tips about how to keep on keeping on.

Confession of Good Deeds by Rev. Christina Leone-Tracy
We might be familiar with the practice of confession-- in which one's transgressions or sins are confessed to a cleric. But what if we practiced confessing good deeds? What joy might we find within ourselves and others? What healing might take place?

Class offering:  “White People’s Work”
with Rev. Christina Leone-Tracy and Brian Looker
Tuesday, September 24th,  6:00-8:00 pm
In our quest to fully live out our UU values, we know that tackling racism is an important part of our spiritual practice. But people who identify as white need to be doing the most work in unlearning and dismantling the harmful effects of systemic racism. Join Fellowship member Brian Looker and Rev. Christina for a two hour class to start doing this important work together. This class is particularly geared toward white folks, but anyone is welcome.
(Optional reading in advance: White Fragility by Robin DiAngelo)

Men’s Group TED Talk Presentation and Discussion
September 29, 12:15 – 2pm (don't worry, there's not a Packer game that day)
The Fellowship Men’s Group invites those identifying as male, including high school aged youth who are accompanied by an adult male family member, to attend and participate. We will start by watching TED talks about men’s roles, identities, and relationships, followed by a discussion about those themes. The TED talks focus on how men have been raised to be strong, unemotional, and dominant in their relationships with women and avoidant of vulnerability. The educators note that while men have many positive qualities, they challenge us to examine the unhealthy aspects of a traditional male role. Light snacks will be provided. Men’s Group members will facilitate the discussion.
Fall Art Theme
The theme for our next art show will be “The Healing Power of Art.” Anyone who has a piece of art that they find healing either by having created it or by the simple act of enjoying it is invited to share it with the Fellowship for a few months. It need not be your original art, but anything that you have found that brings peace to your soul. It needs to be framed and ready to hang on the wall.  We don’t have spaces for objects. The art committee will be hanging the display on September 30th. Please make sure your pieces are labeled on the back with the title and the owner’s name and are delivered to the Fellowship by noon that day. If you need to bring them in beforehand, please contact Cyndi in the office at cyndi@fvuuf.org. Anyone who currently has art on display is asked to remove it at that time. Also, if you are interested in being a part of the art committee, please contact Mary Gerlach gerlachmz@new.rr.com. We can always use more help hanging the shows and expanding the roll of art at the Fellowship.

Wellspring Wednesday
October 9, 6:30 pm
Pantheism with Fellowship member Dave Gerlach
Unitarian Universalists tend to be keenly interested in different spiritual paths.  We often teach our children in religious education about the different world religions.  Plus, we often hear our ministers deliver sermons about those religions over the years.  One religion/spirituality that isn’t talked about as much is Pantheism.  It is a life-affirming, nature-based religion that could hold a lot of promise for us as UU's and for the world at large.  At this program, we'll be treated to a look at this religion from the point of view of a proponent who has come to truly appreciate its appeal. Dave Gerlach is a member of our Fellowship and has spoken about this topic to our Fellowship in prior years.
Sign up for childcare online HERE or at the Sign Up Spot at the Fellowship. We need at least one child signed up 24 hours in advance in order to have childcare.
