Small Steps, Big Impact Podcast

Equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) are our core values as an institution, but we must continue the conversations about how to do this important work on a daily basis. That’s the goal of our Small Steps, Big Impact podcast: on-going conversations about EDI in our classrooms.
This week, Dr. Shelly Brown-Jeffy explores the phenomenon of racial battle fatigue in academia (including on our own campus). Dr. Brown-Jeffy also shares a number of articles and webpages to help in understanding racial battle fatigue, as well as on-campus resources to help manage stress like these Zoom workshops facilitated by the UNCG Counseling Center.

Teaching Tips

This section is full of timely and evidence-based practices to apply in your teaching. This week, we have adapted tips about reaching your most disconnected students from a recent Chronicle of Higher Education article that can be employed in any delivery format:
  • Create Community. Establishing a sense of community and belonging throughout the semester can go a long way in (re)connecting with students. The article suggests sharing your own story as a way to humanize your teaching and break the ice. This resource provides some great ideas for building community in large or small classes. Connecting with students outside of the classroom during office hours or even in passing in the EUC is another great opportunity to show students that they belong on campus and in your discipline.
  • Seek out the Lost. If you notice that students are falling behind on coursework or have a poor attendance record, taking a moment to reach out to that student could make all the difference. Utilizing Starfish flags, referrals, and kudos is another important practice in making sure that students receive the support they need.
  • Meet in the Middle. The article suggests that instructors may need to provide a scaffolded approach towards involving students in High-Impact Practices. For example, while internships can provide impactful opportunities for hands-on learning, not all students can participate in these experiences (which are often unpaid). Instead of exclusively recommending internship opportunities, faculty may consider inviting some students to shadow them in a lab, conduct an informational interview, or inviting students to open networking events and opportunities on campus or in the community.
