The Time is Now: Preparing Girls to Lead in STEM and Beyond
Women comprise nearly half of all employees in the United States and 60% of all undergraduate degrees. Despite these statistics, women hold only 28% of STEM careers. The numbers are even lower in computing and engineering fields (25.2% and 16.5%, respectively), and women of color are present even less, making up just 2% of engineers. With the STEM worker shortage continuing to grow, the solution is simple: hire more women. “If women and underrepresented groups joined the STEM workforce in proportion to their representation in the overall labor force, the STEM worker shortage would disappear” (AAUW.com).
Girls’ schools lead the way in educating and preparing women for STEM majors and professions. On average, “girls’ school graduates are six times more likely to consider majoring in math, science, and technology compared to girls who attended coeducational schools.” —Dr. Tiffani Riggers-Piehl, University of Missouri-Kansas City, Fostering Academic and Social Engagement: An Investigation into the Effects of All-Girls Education in the Transition to University
Graduates of girls’ schools report greater confidence, use of technical skills, and concept comprehension in the sciences. The reason? For decades, girls' schools have been working to recognize and remove the barriers that discourage girls from pursuing STEM-related careers. At girls' schools, the leaders, scientists, writers, artists, and athletes are all young women.“Girls’ schools are experts in how girls learn best, and they are the experts in how girls learn best in STEM” (International Coalition of Girls Schools).

Notre Dame Celebrates 5-Year Anniversary of Visionary Riley Center for STEM Education
Notre Dame has taken dramatic steps forward in preparing girls to become the next leaders in STEM fields. This year, the School is proud to celebrate the 5-year anniversary of the Riley Center for STEM Education, an innovative, 30,000-square-foot hub that provides for every girl the very best in equipment, indoor and outdoor learning spaces, and curricular and co-curricular opportunities, enabling every student to experiment, collaborate, and dream. The Center, which opened in April 2019, includes eight science laboratories, three prep rooms, eight mathematics classrooms, a design thinking and entrepreneurship classroom, and design & innovation, robotics, and coding spaces.
Notre Dame also expanded elective options for Middle and Upper School students, featuring courses like Entrepreneurship, STEM Ethics, Neuroscience, and Biomedical Engineering. Since the Center’s opening, the percentage of Notre Dame graduates pursuing degrees in STEM fields has increased to 55%!
Students also have had the opportunity to hear from inspiring STEM leaders and innovators, most recently Dr. Mae Jemison, former NASA astronaut and the first woman of color in space. Dr. Jemison’s visit was the culmination of the International Sisters in STEM Symposium, which welcomed over 100 students and teachers from sister schools in Argentina, Japan, Peru, Taiwan, and England to Notre Dame’s campus for a week of collaborative problem solving, academic engagement on topics from health to sustainability, and cross cultural dialogue.
