Thriving at UCSB: New Grad Student Orientation
Hundreds of new UC Santa Barbara graduate students were introduced to the campus this month at the Graduate Division's New Graduate Student Orientation. Graduate Division Dean Carol Genetti warmly welcomed the group and encouraged students to live a well-rounded life. The keynote talk by Dr. Turi Honegger of Counseling and Psychological Services focused on how to thrive in graduate school. Information about resources, services, and organizations was shared, including Student Health, the Library, Graduate Students Association, Student Affairs, and resource centers. Graduate student panelists offered advice and answered questions from the audience. Read Communications Peer Melissa Rapp's recap of the event.

People in the News
Our People in the News include summer scholars; new graduate students; a woman who wields a pen for the environment; and a Ph.D. student who wants to "make" things happen. Check out the articles on these exceptional graduate students and scholars.
  • Jessica Perkins. The Grad Slam runner-up held up a single pen in describing her research. She talks about the secrets to her success and how she juggles her studies to earn two degrees: a Bren School Ph.D. and a master's degree in Technology Management.
  • Levi Maaia. The Education Ph.D. student discusses a visit to Cuba to study the country's maker culture; shares who has been a main influence in his life; and offers advice to incoming graduate students.
  • Summer scholars. The Graduate Division hosted another successful summer research program. New this year were blogs created by each of the scholars. Read what the summer experience was like for some of the participants.
  • Amanda Kaczmarek, Jenny Selvidge, Luke Rosedahl, Michelle Grue, Petra Persolja, Rick Thomas, Shriniwas Patwardhan, Tara Clark. UCSB welcomed 841 new graduate students this fall. Career and Professional Development Peer Shawn Warner-Garcia presents some other interesting statistics about our new students in infographics. She also interviewed eight new students (pictured above), who introduced themselves and shared what they are looking forward to in graduate school.
