Pride In Students One of the joys of being Elysian’s Director is watching the influence that our programs have on the children's growth. Last Tuesday I attended the middle school play. Just before the play began, Diane Murray, our play director and 6th grade teacher, announced that this was a student written play (Rebecca Weintraub, 8th grader) that had its beginnings in Mary’s (our music teacher) seminar. A seminar is a theme focused course, taught by a variety of staff and/or guest teachers that cover a full range of topics and that change each semester. Some examples of seminars include Musicals, Poetry, Careers, Hot Topics in Politics, E-Bay (developing businesses), Creative Technological Explosion, Debate, Introduction to Film, and Mural Painting. Next semester we will be adding a seminar in Coding. These courses are designed to stimulate student interest in the topics, with students given a choice as to which seminar they would like to attend. Seminars are part of our 7th and 8th grade program. While watching the play I kept reflecting back to the idea that this was an outgrowth of our academic program! A big thank you to Diane M., Mary and Aram in their support of Rebecca’s efforts. Now that I have been here for more than five years, I have also had the delight of seeing these children grow up, from young children struggling with the issues of childhood to poised pre-teen and teenagers, who are on the cusp of becoming adults. I have watched as they have learned how to learn, how to approach academic topics. I have watched as they developed interpersonal and socialization skills, and how they have developed significant relationships with each other and with adults. The result are thoughtful and caring students. While they are still preteens and teens, they are students who can evaluate ideas and work together to achieve a goal. They are continually caring for and supporting each other and developing relationships with adults. Watching how the academic and social aspects of our students’ lives come together is wonderfully exhilarating. It is even more exciting to realize that what is done in our classrooms on a day to day basis helps to shape this outcome.

SO WHAT IS “CIRCUS MINIMUS: ONE-MAN CIRCUS-IN-A-SUITCASE”?
“From the suitcase of the multi-talented Kevin O’Keefe, an entire circus emerges: tent, band, lights, and a collection of comedic circus characters he inhabits. Included are a boisterous ringmaster, officious usher, glamorous “magician to the stars,” and even an entire family of juggling acrobats. However, the most important performers emerge from the audience. Each performance becomes a dialogue between the characters and the audience—a light-hearted collaboration.” Here’s a link to a short video clip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XDsIhmXRKPs 3 PERFORMANCES – 1 DAY: On Saturday, April 30 only, you can catch the show at 11 am, 2 pm or 5 pm. ELYSIAN RUGBY CLUB
The Elementary (grades 4-5) and Middle School (grades 6-8) Elysian Rugby teams are accepting registration forms for the spring 2016 season. Registration is open to all Elysian students in grades 4-8. Coach John Rutledge will once again be leading the Club!
For the spring season we are only able to field 12 players for each team. Therefore, we’ll hold a one-day tryout on Tuesday, April 12th at 1600 Park from 3:00-3:45pm to determine the 12 players for each team. In order to be a part of one of the teams, you must first and foremost demonstrate good sportsmanship and be a team-oriented player. The Club will meet for weekly practice on Tuesdays from 3:00-3:45pm at 1600 Park. The first practice will be Tuesday, April 19th and run the following dates (weather permitting) – 4/19, 4/26, 5/3, 5/10, 5/17, 5/24, 5/31 and 6/7. Information About Class Trips/ORGS ONLINE
Effective immediately, class trips that incur a fee of $25 or less can only be paid for BY CASH OR CHECK (payable to Elysian Charter School). We will NOT be posting trips with fees of $25.00 or under on ORGS ONLINE any longer. Many of you have expressed concern over the $4.00 surcharge when paying for trips online, so this will no longer be a factor when paying for those less costly trips. It will also make it easier for teachers to track trip payments and be less of a burden on parents to remember to log on to pay. When returning a permission slip to your child's teacher, please remember to attach the cash or check payment. Thank you.
