| CTY Leads Conversations About AI in the Classroom
In April, expert educators convened at CTY’s Sarah D. Barder Fellowship Program’s annual conference to contemplate “Harnessing the Power of AI in Education.” CTY is collaborating across JHU divisions and disciplines to understand how artificial intelligence may be an asset to classroom learning. Demo sessions included robots that serve as math tutors or storytellers, while discussions informed the development of new student and educator guides about working with AI. Discover more about CTY’s innovative research.

Harvey Silikovitz ’82-’85 Reflects on CTY, Jeopardy! Win
It took NYC attorney Harvey Silikovitz more than 24 years and 10 auditions to make it onto Jeopardy! However, he may not have pursued game show glory if it hadn’t been for CTY.
“Many of us were in situations in our local schools where it was difficult to fit in,” Silikovitz said. “It meant so much to me at that age to be at a place where other students and I were free to have intellectual discussions and not be mocked for it, and to form true friendships based on it.”
| |
In fact, Silikovitz was at CTY in 1985 when he met future Jeopardy! champion Adam Taxin, who eventually persuaded him to try out for America’s brainiest game show.
“CTY encouraged curiosity and a love of learning,” he said. “Those definitely became great assets to building my trivia knowledge base.”
Learn more about Silikovitz’s path to victory, as well as his message to others with chronic illness following his own Parkinson’s disease diagnosis.

Cameron Mofid ’12 Named Youngest Person to Visit Every Country
CTY alumnus Cameron Mofid was recently designated by NomadMania as the youngest verified person to have traveled to all 195 countries. His final destination was North Korea, where his participation in the April 6 Pyongyang Marathon gained him entrance into the country.
Mofid, 25, cites his CTY Model United Nations and Advanced Geography course for sparking his passion for international exploration. It also introduced the public speaking and relationship management skills he applies to his career in brand marketing and partnerships.
“During that three-week course, I gained a deep understanding of the geopolitical and historical contexts that make each nation unique,” Mofid said. “That early exposure truly planted the seed for my global journey.”

Nick “Stro” Palastro has been teaching Cryptology at CTY since 2012. This summer, he is working at our Johns Hopkins University site for the first time. What is he looking forward to? “The first day, when I recognize a few returning students and when students start to show their personalities. Sharing the highlights from class with other staff. Making a laundry list of cryptographic puns!”
Brooke Michaud began teaching CTY’s Examining the Evidence forensics course in 2008 and will return to our site at Ursinus College this year. “CTY summers are the best! It is so amazing to see how much CTY students and staff grow and learn during our time together, both academically and personally. CTY has and will always have a special place in my heart.”
