Career Navigator News is a biweekly newsletter from your Career Navigator, Katie Hendrickson.

Beginning of the End? Nope, and Winter Isn't Over Either, It Seems
If I'd sent this newsletter out a week early, I could have waxed poetic about spring coming early to Minnesota, and what new beginnings we were all about to experience in this interesting year. Ha! Winter isn't over by a long shot, and neither is this school year.
Themed months continue in March with Post-Secondary Month. Log into FutureForward™ to check out some of the live events that Minnesota Colleges are hosting. If you don't have access, please get in touch.
May brings Hospitality Month AND a brand new event: the Business and Community Partner Celebration! Don't miss your opportunity to extoll the generosity of one of your community or business partners working with your school and students. One entry per school, please. Click to enter your nominee by March 26!
#WIt's inevitable that we begin to look down the road a bit at what next year will bring. In my career navigator role, summer will be a busy time of focusing on building business relationships as well as the initiatives that you, my school partners, want me to continue working on to further develop CTE opportunities for your students.
Also, spoiler alert, expect to see me working in strong partnership with the Southeast Perkins Consortium for the rest of the year and into the future.
Be well, stay warm, and dream of spring!

Pass to Your Students: Home Builders Institute Grant

Recently, the Home Builders Institute (HBI) announced that the 3rd Annual Schools to Skills grant program is now accepting applications! Schools to Skills is a high-school-focused program funded by the Home Depot Foundation (THDF) and the National Housing Endowment (NHE) to support secondary schools in the creation or enhancement of their construction trades programs. These important grant funds will support providing valuable training to students with the inclusion of HBI’s Pre-Apprenticeship Certificate Training (PACT) curriculum.

It is a joint effort to get more students learning about career pathways in residential construction with the ultimate goal of having more students enter this industry to fill the growing skilled labor gap in the United States.

Upon successful completion of the PACT curriculum and assessment, students will earn:
  • a pre-apprenticeship
  • industry-recognized certification that is endorsed by the National Association of Home Builders and is one of three curricula recognized by the U.S. Department of Labor – all provided at no cost to the students.

The Schools to Skills program is open to all secondary schools. Please use the link below to apply. Applications are DUE BY MIDNIGHT, MARCH 31st, 2021.

Pencil This In: May 14
On Friday, May 14 (7:30-8:30 a.m.) Southeast Service Cooperative and the Career Navigator team will be hosting a Business and Community Partner Celebration to recognize the business and community members who are graciously volunteering their time and talents to help our students with career exploration activities.
These activities include career fair presenter, job shadow host, informational interviews, guest classroom speaker, as well as many other roles. The support from these partnerships is incredibly valuable to our students and schools, and we are excited to be able to express our gratitude, and share some of the enormous impact that partners are having across SE Minnesota schools.
I will be reaching out later this month with more information about this event, and please be sure to turn in your school's nominee for "Community or Industry Partner of the Year" by March 26.
