2 Samuel 6:14-15
Wearing a linen ephod, David was dancing before the Lord with all his might, while he and all Israel were bringing up the ark of the Lord with shouts and the sound of trumpets.
New International Version (NIV)
When is the time to dance?  I only ask because Solomon wrote in Ecclesiastes, “There is a time to dance.”  When do you dance?  I know.  I know.  We are Baptists and we do not dance.  My mom was a non-dancing Baptist.  My father who grew up in the Brethren church had no such qualms.  To this day, given the chance, he will dance an Irish jig.

David danced before the Lord with all his might as he brought the Ark of the Covenant into Israel.  His estranged wife, the daughter of Saul was underwhelmed and unimpressed.  When she critiqued his dancing, David explained, “It wasn’t for you.  I was dancing for God.”

The Lord of the dance has invited us to dance.  We call it worship.  “Sometimes,” my friend Paul Powell used to say, “Worship is confrontation.”  True enough.  But sometimes worship is celebration.  Even if our feet don’t dance, when we think of all God has done for us in Christ, our hearts should dance.  W. H. Auden wrote, “I know nothing, except what everyone knows - if there when Grace dances, I should dance.”  God has come into our world in Christ.  The grace of God dances in our midst.  There is a time to dance.  The time is now.
Pray with me:
Lord of the dance, thank you for your gracious invitation to join you.  We confess we are shy to dance in the presence of our King.  But today, when we think about what you have done for us, let us worship you with abandon, having more regard for you than for what others think of our worship.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen.
This year our Every Day with Jesus readings will follow The Bible Project Read Scripture Plan.  Copies of this reading plan are available at Tallowood Baptist Church, or download
the app at readscripture.org.  Read through the Bible with us in 2019!
Joyfully,
