Ecclesiastes 5:1-2
Guard your steps when you go to the house of God. Go near to listen rather than to offer the sacrifice of fools, who do not know that they do wrong.
Do not be quick with your mouth,
do not be hasty in your heart
    to utter anything before God.
God is in heaven
    and you are on earth,
so let your words be few.

New International Version (NIV)
We should count our words because words count.  This is always true but most especially when it comes to worship.   Solomon writes to the worshipers of his day about walking in obedience and not wasting words.

How do we prepare to worship God?  I am in the habit of laying out my clothes the night before.  Good rest on Saturday night has become an ambition which sometimes evades me.  Even more than what we wear, we could give attention to the state of our hearts.  Are we walking in obedience as we come into the Lord’s house?  In this case, ignorance may not be bliss.

Someone described the Apostle Peter as one who had to say something whether or not he had something to say.  Let this not be said of us.  As James counseled in 1:19-20, “Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to anger . . .”  Less is more, especially with words.
Pray with me:
Father, let our words be few.  Prepare our hearts now to worship you corporately this weekend.  Convict of sin that we may confess and be cleansed.  We will obey, do what you say.  You are in heaven.  We are on earth.  Let our words be few.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen.
This year our Every Day with Jesus readings will follow The Bible Project Read Scripture Plan.  Copies of this reading plan are available at Tallowood Baptist Church, or download
the app at readscripture.org.  Read through the Bible with us in 2019!
Joyfully,
