Retreat Wrap-Up: Advancing the Quality of Cardiac Rehabilitation in Australia
What an inspiring two days we had at the Australian Cardiac Rehabilitation Quality Initiative Retreat, held late May at Bond University’s Robina Campus on the Gold Coast.
Led by SOLVE-CHD, the retreat brought together more than 25 passionate individuals from across the country — including researchers, clinicians, PhD candidates, and representatives from the Heart Foundation, the Australian Cardiovascular Health and Rehabilitation Association (ACRA), and HeartBeat Victoria, a volunteer-run nonprofit supporting people with heart conditions and their families.
The retreat featured a series of interactive workshops filled with rich discussion, collaborative idea generation, and strong momentum for meaningful change in the delivery of cardiac rehabilitation.
One of the most valuable outcomes of the retreat was the collective agreement on national priorities and practical next steps to elevate the quality and consistency of cardiac rehabilitation services across Australia.
We leave the retreat energised and united, with a shared vision:
To strengthen, standardise, and scale cardiac rehabilitation so that every Australian - regardless of location, has access to high-quality heart care.
We’ll be sharing some exciting news at the upcoming ACRA ASM in August 2025 - stay tuned for updates!
SOLVE-CHD Travel Scholarships 2025

Heart2Heart

Heart2Heart is a community-based, single-blind randomised controlled trial designed to evaluate the effectiveness of a digital peer support program for people living with heart disease led by Prof Julie Redfern. The primary outcome - social connectedness, measured using a validated scale - is assessed at 6 months, with secondary outcomes (hospital admissions, all-cause mortality, lifestyle, medication adherence, and health service utilisation) assessed at both 6 and 12 months.
Recruitment of participants has proceeded steadily via five cardiac rehabilitation sites and social media. As of May 2025, 150 participants have consented and 55 have completed their 6-month follow-up surveys, representing a completion rate of 79%. The protocol paper for Heart2Heart has been published here and the study will be presented at the upcoming CSANZ and ESC conferences.
Congratulations to the entire team for developing this innovative, holistic and extremely pertinent project in this digital age, with special thanks to Wendy Shi and Emily Li for their tireless efforts in rolling out Heart2Heart so far!
