Mark 16:7-8
They discussed this among themselves and said, “It is because we didn’t bring any bread.”
Aware of their discussion, Jesus asked, “You of little faith, why are you talking among yourselves about having no bread?

New International Version (NIV)
What you see in life depends on where you set up shop.  We set up shop at the entrance to an empty tomb.  Resurrection is a new category.  Ezekiel had a vision of bones coming to life, but people had no frame of reference of resurrection in ancient times.  Death felt final.

No wonder the disciples had no idea what to do when Jesus died.  As long as he was alive, they had hope.  But then he was crucified.  They buried him and went to complete the job after the Sabbath ended.  Imagine their surprise.  Their wonder.  Their joy?  Calvin Miller once said when Jesus walked victoriously out of the tomb his first words were, “Tadaaaa!”

The stone they thought they couldn’t move had already moved.  The body they thought the would prepare was not there.  The angel whom they never expected was sitting in a white robe.  The “young man” said, “He is not here.  He is risen . . .”  Then he told them Jesus had gone before them so they should look for him.

Jesus has gone before us, into death and back to life.  He precedes us everywhere we go.  Look for him today.  Where is Jesus today?   Wherever we go.  When we buried Melanie’s dad we returned to the cemetery where we buried her mom.  Jim had poured concrete beside the grave and set up a stone bench.  Easter of 2003 we went there and saw the bleak sight of fresh dirt.  I sobbed and turned away.  Then in the distance I heard Christians sing, “It is well.  It is well with my soul.”  Then I remembered.  Even in the cemetery he has gone before us.  Look for him.  You will see him.
Pray with me:
Father, thank you for the power of the cross and the life-giving power of resurrection.  Make us observant today.  Let us look for you everywhere we go today.  Thank you for going before us.  We are never alone because Jesus is alive.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen.
This year our Every Day with Jesus readings will follow The Bible Project Read Scripture Plan.  Copies of this reading plan are available at Tallowood Baptist Church, or download
