Are you tough or are you tender?
Are you tough or are you tender?

Isaiah 40:28-31
Do you not know?
    Have you not heard?
The Lord is the everlasting God,
    the Creator of the ends of the earth.
He will not grow tired or weary,
    and his understanding no one can fathom.
He gives strength to the weary
    and increases the power of the weak.
Even youths grow tired and weary,
    and young men stumble and fall;
but those who hope in the Lord
    will renew their strength.
They will soar on wings like eagles;
    they will run and not grow weary,
    they will walk and not be faint.

New International Version (NIV)
                Are you tough or tender?  What would your family say?  One friend of mine described the tough neighborhood he grew up in:  “The farther you went down the street, the tougher the people were.  We lived in the last house on the block!”

                Have you noticed that some of the people with the toughest exterior have the most tender hearts?  Just so, God has all the power he needs to rescue us like sheep gone astray.  He is tender and tough.   The fortieth chapter of Isaiah begins with comfort.  “Comfort, comfort my people,” says the Lord about captive Israel.  Tenderly, God tends his flock like a shepherd (40:11).  Still, he powerfully holds the oceans in his hands.

                Our God is incomparable.  He is not like anything or anyone we can mention.  So for people who feel forgotten, Isaiah offers hope.  God is strong enough to help us.  He is compassionate enough to come to us.  If we hope in him, he will renew our strength so that we soar, run and walk.  So what hard thing do you face today?  Take heart.  God is strong enough to help you do it.  He can do anything but fail.
Pray with me:
Incomparable, indefatigable God, we come to you today as our source of strength.  Idols have failed us again.  They never fail to fail.  You, on the other hand can do anything but fail.  Renew our strength God.  If we need to soar today, be the wind beneath our wings.  When we run, let us run to you our refuge.  Teach us to walk humbly with you.  We pray in Jesus’ name.  Amen.
This year our Every Day with Jesus readings will follow The Bible Project Read Scripture Plan.  Copies of this reading plan are available at Tallowood Baptist Church, or download
