John 17:20-22
“My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message,  that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me.  I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one—"
New International Version (NIV)
Do we have a prayer?  This week I received a beautiful letter from a church member who told me she has been praying for me on the anniversary of my mom’s death two years ago.  To be clear, my mom prayed for me, and now a wonderful friend prays for me on the day my mom went home to be with the Lord.  I am so grateful.

If you could only have one person pray for you, who would it be?  Several candidates come to mind for me.  I know my parents and Melanie’s parents prayed for us.  Melanie’s pastor R. B. Baker prayed for us at our wedding.  We know members of our church pray for us, too.   Once I walked into the reference room of Tallowood’s amazing library and found ladies there praying.  Imagine my great joy to find that they were praying for me.

If someone is praying for us, we have a prayer.  Paul told the Ephesians, “And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests.  With this in mind always keep on praying for all the saints.”  We pray for each other.

In the Gospel of John we find the true Lord’s prayer.  This is Jesus praying on behalf of his disciples and everyone who comes to believe because of their witness.  We are in that number.  Jesus prayed for us nearly 2000 years before we were born.  Good news:  he hasn’t stopped.   He ever lives to intercede for God’s people.  Robert Murray McCheyne once said, “If I could hear Jesus in the next room praying for me, I would not fear anything in the world.  The distance makes no difference.  He is praying for me!”  Friend, if Jesus Christ is praying for us, we can never doubt, we have a prayer!
Pray with me:
Father, today we pray in unison with our Savior who intercedes for us.  Do in our lives what he says!  Save us by your grace.  Make us one so that the world may believe in you.  We pray in Jesus’ name.  Amen.
This year our Every Day with Jesus readings will follow The Bible Project Read Scripture Plan.  Copies of this reading plan are available at Tallowood Baptist Church, or download
the app at readscripture.org.  Read through the Bible with us in 2019!
Joyfully,
