The Call of the Wild Camper
You like to hike in to remote places and experience nature at its wildest. You’re completely self-sufficient and know how to read a map, make camp, secure your provisions and follow Leave No Trace principles. Great news: virtually all of Pisgah National Forest and Gorges State Park are at your disposal, within reason, of course. For example, in Pisgah, you can’t camp within 1000 feet of a
road or a designated closed area or within 200 feet of water (streams, lakes, etc.). In designated wilderness areas within Pisgah – like Shining Rock Wilderness – no campfires are allowed. And there may be other seasonal limitations. There is no camping in DuPont State Recreational Forest or
Headwaters State Forest. You can find more details on primitive camping in Pisgah by calling the Pisgah Ranger Station (828-877-3265) and in Gorges by going here.

The Call of the Wild (Light) Camper
You share many of the characteristics of #1, but you don’t want to have to pack in a lot of gear. Have we got the place(s) for you! The Pisgah Ranger District maintains 65 dispersed roadside camping spots located throughout the forest. They are available on a first come – first serve basis and include a fire ring, a tent pad and parking spot. Here are all the details and locations of each.
Community Camper
You love the outdoors and don’t mind sharing it with others. Plus, you put a high value on things like hot showers and flushing toilets. Again, we have you covered. There are six private campgrounds located in Transylvania County. Additionally, Pisgah National Forest offers the ever-popular Davidson River Campground with over 144 sites available from March 25 – Nov 14 and 44 sites offered from Nov 15- Mar 24. And Gorges State Park will soon offer 17 tent sites in its new campground, set to open in the fall of 2022.
All The Comforts of Home – With Wheels – Camper
If you’ve got an RV, we’ve got a spot for you. Transylvania County has 11 private RV campgrounds and resorts, most of which offer water, sewer, electric service, picnic tables and more. Additionally, the Gorges State Park campground will offer 14 “Class A” RV sites with full hook ups. Davidson River Campground also offers a number of RV sites with multiple amenities. Look here for a complete listing.
Home Away From Home Camper
The idea of camping appeals to you but the idea of sleeping on the ground leaves your spouse, or your kids, or even you (if we’re completely honest) cold. In that case, a great compromise would be a rustic – and oh-so-classic – cabin in the woods. Here again, Transylvania has no shortage of options – some of which offer wonderful sleeping porches that keep you comfy but covered. Look here to find your perfect cabin getaway.
