Kate Neubert-Lechner, Executive Director |
| Dear Playhouse Friends,
As we reach the halfway point in our 2018-2019 season, we are thrilled to bring you one of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s most popular shows, Evita. While written over 40 years ago about a political couple who saw the height of their power over 70 years ago, it is remarkable how the rise to power of Eva Duarte and Juan Perón is relevant in our contemporary, political society. Argentina was plagued in that time by national issues of political corruption and extreme income inequality, with little to no way for the lower and middle classes to move up in society and make a better future for themselves or their families. As you enjoy the performance, with its gorgeous costumes, lighting, and soaring music, I challenge you to judge this story for yourself. Was Eva Perón the saint some said she was, or was she a corrupt manipulator who put her own needs and desires ahead of those she claimed to protect? Has history repaired or corrupted our vision of her and what can we learn from her life as we examine the landscape in our country today? These are the debates we hope this production inspires. We hope you enjoy the show and the wonderful conversations you’ll have afterwards.
