The Statehouse Reporting Project, which brings together student-powered statehouse newsrooms all over the country, has launched with the help of a $250,000 grant from philanthropic organization Arnold Ventures. The project helps realize a long-held goal of director and J-School Professor Mark Horvit to capture more nationwide context in state government stories that too often stop at state lines. It also fills an important need as students continue to represent an ever-larger share of statehouse reporters in the industry.

John Schreiber, MA ’11, has earned the President’s Award from the Society of Camera Operators for his photojournalism covering the Los Angeles wildfires earlier this year. Schreiber comes from a long line of Mizzou connections: He met his wife at the School of Journalism, and his parents also met in Columbia. His grandfather is one of Mizzou’s oldest living alums. Not even his car mechanic in Los Angeles is spared; the mechanic’s daughter is currently studying photojournalism at Mizzou.
