Six teams in Pittsburgh for the Residency Program |
The six teams that participated in the Patient Innovation (PI) Bootcamp in May 2024 will be at CMU from April 7th to 11th for an in-person intensive residency, phase II of the Accelerator Program.
The Accelerator Program supports life science startups through a partnership between CMU Portugal, NOVA Medical School, and Nova SBE.

David Semedo and João Magalhães, CMU Portugal National co-director, both researchers at NOVA LINCS had their research proposal, focusing on enhancing the trustworthiness of Large Language Models (LLMs), selected for the 2025 Amazon Nova AI Challenge, a worldwide university AI competition.
Among the student team members participating in the challenge are Diogo Silva (team leader) and Diogo Tavares, CMU Portugal‘s Affiliated Ph.D. students at NOVA FCT in the area of Language Technologies.

CMU Portugal student André Duarte speaks at Priberam Lab Seminar |
André Duarte, a Dual Degree Ph.D. student in Language Technologies, was the invited speaker at the Priberam Lab Machine Learning Seminar on March 11 at Instituto Superior Técnico in Lisbon. He presented his research focused on detecting copyrighted text and visual content in the training data of language models.

Beatrice Maggipinto and Mathilde Gouin, CMU Portugal Ph.D. students and researchers in Human-Computer Interaction, participated in the 2025 International Conference on Tangible, Embedded, and Embodied Interaction (TEI’25) from March 4-7 in France, presenting their research work.

| Erica Fuchs Named Kavčić-Moura Professor of Engineering and Public Policy Department |
CMU Portugal faculty member Erica Fuchs was selected to receive a College of Engineering endowed chair, recognizing outstanding scholarly achievement. Fuchs was named Kavčić-Moura Professor of the Engineering and Public Policy (EPP) Department at CMU. Endowed chairs are one of the highest recognitions that can be awarded to a faculty member.
