Clemson study shows parents balancing careers, childcare during pandemic
Scott Barkowski, assistant professor in the John E. Walker Department of Economics, conducted a study that found that parents with young children were about 1 percentage point more likely to be working at their jobs during the pandemic than those who didn’t have young children. “That one percentage point translates into about a half-million more parents working who had young children than if they worked at the same rate as adults who didn’t have a young child.”

Clemson study is showing trolls win Twitter influence with ‘honey,’ not animus
In a yet-to-be-released study, Clemson University researchers Patrick Warren and Darren Linvill are examining the strategies Russian social media trolls employ in peddling their disinformation campaigns aimed at dividing the U.S. public. Warren recently presented early findings of their most recent research into Russian Twitter trolls at a Clemson online research symposium this summer. In it, he reported their initial studies are revealing that creating friendships, not instigating fights, appears to be the trolls’ most successful path toward influencing political discourse in the U.S.

Cat Bromels keeps Clemson streak intact for flexographic scholarship
For the seventh consecutive year, a Clemson University student has received the coveted Rossini Scholarship, which grants funds to a student and their school for winning a flexographic printing research proposal. Cat Bromels of Chicago is the 2020 recipient of the FFTA Rossini North America Flexographic Research Scholarship. The $13,000 scholarship provides $10,000 to Cat, a master’s degree student in the Department of Graphic Communications, and $3,000 to that College of Business program.

Clemson alumnus becomes first Marine fighter pilot to graduate TOPGUN in F-35
U.S. Marine Corps Maj. Derek “Shootsbe” Heinz, a 2007 Clemson University ROTC alumnus, has graduated the Navy Strike Fighter Weapons School (TOPGUN) course in the nation’s newest and most advanced fighter jet, the F-35C. The Navy announced Heinz became one of the first two F-35 pilots to graduate from the TOPGUN course flying the fifth-generation Joint Strike Fighter.

Management student Sudarshan Sridharan’s start-up, SaveMAPS, was featured in an Inc. Magazine story about companies launched during the pandemic. SaveMAPS aims to keep “mom and pop” retail businesses open by enabling customers to buy gift cards for restaurants.
