Camp News
Camper Spotlight
The South Shore YMCA is proud to offer inclusion supports at our 3 Day Camp Locations:  Camp Gordon Clark in Hanover, Quincy Day Camp in Quincy and Nature Adventure Day Camp in Norwell.  Now in our sixth week of camp, there is an average of 100 campers per week identified as needing inclusion supports between our 3 sites.
One such camper, Alex, a 7 year old camper whose family requested inclusion supports is enjoying his experience at the Nature Adventure Day Camp in Norwell. Alex’s parents report “he is making friends at camp and it is wonderful to hear him talking about the games he played and the names of some of the kids he played with. This may not seem like much of an achievement but witnessing him noticing the other kids he is playing with and knowing their names is wonderful social skills progress.”

Author and Motivational Speaker, James Breen Speaks With Camp Counselors
On August 2nd, Camp Gordon Clark Leader’s In Training (L.I.T.’s) and counselors had the opportunity to participate in a discussion group led by 26 year old James “Jamey” Breen from Scituate. Jamey is a motivational speaker and Author of the book “Keep It Rolling”. He is a wheelchair user and lives with cerebral palsy, but is not defined or limited by it. He shared with these young counselors the importance they can have in being a positive role model for young campers. He draws his message from his brother Dan, who was a long time counselor at Camp Gordon Clark and was tragically killed in a car accident in 2013. “Dan was my best friend and role model, he gave me confidence and I want to turn around and be a role model and mentor for other’s that may need it by spreading positivity,” shared Jamey.
Swim Team Film Screen A Success
On Tuesday, July 18th, members of the South Shore YMCA Strypers team, their families, and members of the Inclusion Family and Community Network came together for a screening of the uplifting, award-winning documentary Swim Team at Laura’s Center for the Arts.
Swim Team is an inspiring look at the rise of a competitive swim team of teens on the autism spectrum. Following three teammates on the cusp of adulthood through their triumphs they achieve as they strive for independence, inclusion, and a life that feels like winning.
The film did indeed tug at the heartstrings of the audience as it demonstrated what the sport of swimming can do to uplift people of all abilities. In addition, those in attendance cheered as an announcement was made of our commitment to create our own inclusive Strypers Swim Team at the South Shore YMCA. Lisa Drennan, Association Director of Inclusion says, “through the leadership of Bernie Dickman, our Director of Competitive Swimming and the support of our swim team community, I look forward to bringing this opportunity to fruition”.

Student Intern Gets a Variety of Inclusion Experience
Melissa Hurlburt from Whitman is a Senior at Springfield College’s Rehabilitation and Disability Studies Program.  This spring and summer, she has participated in the Y’s inclusion department internship program gaining a vast variety of practical and hands on experience through our Adaptive Fitness, Lobstars Tennis, Partnership Program, Building Bridges and as an inclusion counselor at our Nature Adventures Day Camp.  “Being involved in the Inclusion Program at the South Shore YMCA has been an incredible experience; I have learned several techniques, which have helped me grow and deepen my education in similar fields of work,” says Melissa.
“As well as providing crucial support for our campers, counselors and families, Melissa has been instrumental in creating and implementing a variety of hands on and senses-based activitities for our campers at the South Shore Natural Science Center,” says Lisa Drennan, Association Director of Inclusion.

SSNSC Educators Present a STEM-Based Program for the National Federation for the Blind
The South Shore Natural Science Center (SSNSC), through a previous collaborative relationship with the National Federation of the Blind (NFB), was invited to present a STEM-based program for blind High School students from around the country at the 10th NFB Youth Slam, a weeklong learning opportunity that gets blind students excited about STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) and careers in STEM, by offering hands-on learning opportunities.
Louise Beaudry, Senior Environmental Educator, and Tricia DeGiulio, Education Director, made their way to the campus of Towson University, just north of Baltimore, Maryland. Louise developed and implemented a week-long "Aquatic Ecosystems and Water Science" program based on a similar program the Science Center facilitated for Hanover Middle School students.
Having the opportunity to learn from and participate in this NFB sponsored STEM "YouthSlam" experience solidifies the commitment and "Inclusive" philosophy of the South Shore Natural Science Center and South Shore YMCA.

Health Education Spotlight:  LIVESTRONG Cancer Survivors Program
This free program is a 12-week small group program designed for adult cancer survivors. This program fulfills the important need of supporting adult cancer survivors physically and emotionally to return to their normal life or their "new normal." Meeting twice a week for 90 minutes, it is conducted outside of medical facilities to emphasize that LIVESTRONG at the YMCA is about overall health, not disease.
Member Kathy Crowley, shares her story: I am 57 years "young" and very proud survivor of stage 4 non Hodgkin's lymphoma. I would highly recommend to anyone who has ever had to experience the fight against cancer. The LIVESTRONG at the YMCA program is what gives me faith and motivation to get through hardest days. It is a program where you will make life time friends. What I mostly want to express here is my truest thanks to our family Y in Hanover for keeping us strong no matter what the odds. Don't let the small stuff ruin your day. Work like you don't need the money, love like you never been hurt and dance like no one is looking!!! And always… LIVESTRONG.
For more information on our Livestrong program contact Katelyn Szafir (617)479-8500 EXT 8228.
