CMU Portugal has up to €400k to support Exploratory projects in ICT
A new Call is open, under the Carnegie Mellon Portugal Program to support Exploratory Research Projects (ERPs) in strategic emerging areas of ICT, funded through Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT) until January 22nd, 2025 (5 pm GMT).

CMU Portugal 2024 Summit: Portuguese Delegation led by Minister Fernando Alexandre visits Carnegie Mellon for a two-day event
Portuguese Minister of Education, Science and Innovation, Fernando Alexandre made his first official visit to Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) in Pittsburgh, alongside the Secretary of State for Science, Ana Paiva, to attend the 2024 edition of the CMU Portugal Summit. The two-day event brought together the Portuguese and CMU communities for a series of discussions and an overview of the CMU Portugal Program, aiming to support the Minister’s reflection and evaluation of the partnership’s future.

João Magalhães is the new co-director of the Carnegie Mellon Portugal Program
João Magalhães, Full Professor at the Department of Computer Science from Universidade NOVA de Lisboa (FCT NOVA) and coordinator of the Multimodal Systems Group at the NOVA LINCS research center, was appointed in October 2024, as the new National Co-director of the CMU Portugal Program by Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (FCT). Magalhães shares the leadership of the international partnership with Inês Lynce.

Inês Lynce, CMU Portugal National Co-Director, appointed member of the National Council for Science, Technology and Innovation
Inês Lynce, also President of INESC-ID and Full Professor at Instituto Superior Técnico, was appointed as a member of the National Council for Science, Technology and Innovation (CNCTI) is among the 20 people selected for their recognized merit representing R&D institutions, technology and innovation centers, higher education institutions, clinical academic centers, science and technology networks and consortiums, the business community, and the international scientific community.

CMU Portugal research paper wins “Best Portuguese Internet Research Award - Internet Society 2024”
A research paper from the CMU Portugal Exploratory Research Project “DAnon - Supervised Deanonymization of Dark Web Traffic for Cybercrime Investigation" won the 2024 Best Portuguese Internet Research Award by the Portuguese Chapter of the Internet Society (ISOC).
It was authored by Daniela Lopes, a CMU Portugal Affiliated Ph.D. student at INESC-ID and Instituto Superior Técnico, and co-authored by her advisors and DAnon principal investigators, Nuno Santos (Técnico | INESC-ID) and Nicolas Christin (CyLab, Carnegie Mellon University).

CMU Portugal student André Duarte wins SPARK award for best student article at CRAI Forum 2024
André Duarte, a newly admitted student at CMU Portugal Dual Degree Ph.D. Program in Language Technologies (class of 2024/2025) has been awarded the SPARK Award for the best PhD student article.
His article “DE-COP: Detecting Copyrighted Content in Language Models Training Data”, was selected among 44 academic submitted projects.

A team of researchers of NOVA LINCS, led by Diogo Silva, an Affiliated Ph.D. student in Language Technologies at NOVA School of Science and Technology, presented their research papers at the 2024 Conference on Empirical Methods in Natural Language Processing, held on November 12-16, in Miami, US.

CMU Portugal student Tamás Karácsony recognized at the IEEE AI Research Hub Competition
Tamás Karácsony, researcher at INESC TEC and CMU Portugal Affiliated Ph.D. Student in Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade do Porto (FEUP) received the “Innovation and Contribution to the field of AI” award from the IEEE AI Research Hub Competition, at GITEX GLOBAL Largest Tech & Startup Show in the World.
Tamás has been working on innovative AI solutions to develop tools to support the diagnosis of epilepsy, using computer vision techniques, from high-resolution 4K RGB, infrared, and depth videos.

In the Media: “Prometheus-1” satellite will be launched in January 2025
The 5 cm PocketQube satellite Prometheus-1 is set to be launched into space, aboard a Space X rocket, in January 2025. The launch has recently gained significant media attention featuring on TV coverages by Portuguese channels RTP and SIC Notícias. Prometheus-1 was developed at Universidade do Minho in collaboration with Instituto Superior Técnico and Carnegie Mellon University, under the CMU Portugal’s Exploratory Research Project “Prometheus”.

On December 5th, the Carnegie Mellon Portugal Program brought together Affiliated, Dual Degree Ph.D. and Visiting Students & Faculty, in parallel events taking place in Lisbon and Pittsburgh, including workshops and a networking lunch.
