Isaiah 40:28-31
Do you not know?
    Have you not heard?
The Lord is the everlasting God,
    the Creator of the ends of the earth.
He will not grow tired or weary,
    and his understanding no one can fathom.
 He gives strength to the weary
    and increases the power of the weak.
Even youths grow tired and weary,
    and young men stumble and fall;
 but those who hope in the Lord
    will renew their strength.
They will soar on wings like eagles;
    they will run and not grow weary,
    they will walk and not be faint.

New International Version (NIV)
                Have you seen the documentary Dropbox?  It is a movie about children being abandoned in another country.  Babies born with disabilities, rejected by parents were completely helpless to save themselves.  Have you ever felt helpless?  What did you do?  Where do we find help and hope when they are in short supply?

               When Hezekiah showed the treasures of Israel to the Babylonians, Isaiah told him that someday the Babylonians would take those very treasures away from the people of God (Isaiah 39).  A few generations after Hezekiah died the Babylonians began to sack Jerusalem and carry people into captivity.  Isaiah’s words came true.  God’s people were helpless to save themselves.

                What do you say to people in captivity?  Isaiah 40-66 promise God’s restoration of his people.  The words begin with comfort for God’s people.  The captives had complained that God had forgotten them (40:27).  Isaiah’s words challenge that assumption. “Comfort, comfort my people,” says the Lord.  We are still God’s people, even when we feel forsaken.  God is neither tired nor unaware.  He knows what is going on in our lives and he knows what to do.

                The movie Dropbox tells the story of the pastor of God’s Love Community Church, who started rescuing the abandoned children.  He and his church built a home for the homeless children offering help to the helpless.  Paul told the Christians in Rome that God saved us when we were helpless to save ourselves.  When we are discouraged, or overwhelmed, we wait for God in hope.  He will not disappoint.  Our almighty God gives his power to his people, renewing our strength.  Like Eagles we soar.  We run and do not get tired.  We walk without fainting.  Our God is worth the wait.

 Pray with me:
Father, there is no use pretending to be powerful when we are not.  Like children abandoned on a doorstep, we cannot save ourselves.  Thank you for finding a way to find us.  Right on time you sent your Son to us, born as a baby, placed in a feeding trough.  May his coming comfort us today.  Give us grace to acknowledge how much we need you today.  We are not and have never been self-sufficient.  All of our sufficiency is in you.  So help us again today to trust you in faith and hope.  Renew our strength.  Enable us to fly, run and walk again.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen.
  This year we focus our Every Day with Jesus readings on Jesus’ story.  With references to Tallowood's Read Through the Bible in 2018 daily reading plan, let's focus our undivided attention on Jesus and follow where he lead. He will not fail. Neither will we!

Joyfully,
