As 2024 comes to an end, I would like to take a moment to reflect on all the Department has accomplished. This year has been both productive and rewarding, marked by remarkable achievements that reflect our shared mission to strengthen Tennessee by strengthening Tennesseans. Here is a brief list of our top ten accomplishments of 2024:
|
-
Improved our business processes and technology: We successfully launched the new Eligibility Benefits Management System (EBMS), replacing a 32-year-old platform, to better serve our customers with improved efficiency, resulting in quicker SNAP application turnaround times. In October 2024, the SNAP application turnaround time was about 8.6 days.
-
Expanded child care access: Creating over 20,000 new child care slots, and partnering with the U.S. Department of Defense to provide child care payment assistance for our armed services families.
- Supported employment goals: Enabling more than 1,700 Vocational Rehabilitation customers to achieve employment averaging 30 hours per week at an average wage of $15.19 per hour.
-
Fed our communities: Providing more than 3 million meals through the Summer Food Service Program during the state fiscal year.
- Protected our vulnerable population: Conducting over 8,000 Adult Protective Services investigations.
-
Provided food benefits: Issuing over $1.6 billion in SNAP benefits and reimbursing thousands of Tennesseans impacted by SNAP skimming fraud.
- Launched our Fatherhood Initiative: Opening the first application grant cycle to provide funding to organizations directly serving fathers.
-
Enhanced communication: Improving customer engagement through the One DHS Customer Portal, proactive text messaging, contact center updates, press announcements, and creative social media campaigns.
- Delivered disaster relief to Hurricane Helene victims: Providing resources and food assistance benefits to families in East Tennessee affected by Hurricane Helene.
-
Connected families to resources: Adopting KidCentral TN, a comprehensive website providing Tennessee families with vital state resources focused on children.

To say the least, this has truly been a remarkable year for TDHS, filled with impactful milestones and progress that reflect the strength of our team and our commitment to those we serve.

Join us for the Summer Food Service Program’s Annual Summer Summit on January 15th |
We invite you to join us for the annual Summer Summit on January 15, 2025 from 10am-3pm CT at Nashville Inner City Ministry, 1000 Apex St, Nashville TN, 37206. The event will bring together the Tennessee Department of Human Services, Tennessee Department of Education, United States Department of Agriculture Food and Nutrition Service, food program sponsors, community organizations, and national, state, and local thought leaders on food insecurity and food access. During the Summit, participants and attendees will focus on how the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) will provide meals to school-age children during the 2024 summer months when the National School Lunch Program is unavailable.
The SFSP is made possible through partnerships with community organizations that sponsor and provide meals using funding available through TDHS. The Summit is a great opportunity for community organizations and nonprofits to learn about sponsorship and join the fight against hunger. To register for the event, please click here.
