Emergency Update

Dear student,

We hope classes and the winter quarter have been going well thus far. As you may be aware, the Bay Area, including the Stanford Campus, is anticipating strong storms that may produce heavy rain and high wind gusts during the next several days, and throughout the weekend.

Residential & Dining Enterprises (R&DE) has been closely following the weather conditions and forecast and making plans to respond to possible outcomes, including a power outage. We are sharing here information about our emergency response so that you are aware of resources available to you if the power goes out.

Advance Preparations

Prepare for a possible power outage:

Charge your phone, laptop and other devices.
Make sure you know where to find your flashlight and batteries.
If you have the ability to place perishables in a cooler/pack in the refrigerator, that may offer you several additional hours of safe storage.
Know that power outages will affect a building’s hot water and heating systems.

Electricity

In the event of a power outage, be sure appliances are in the ‘off’ position or unplugged to prevent fire hazards when power is restored.

Flashlight. R&DE staff will deliver flashlights to dining halls serving students without power as soon as possible following an outage. If you do not already own a flashlight, you may retrieve one at your respective dining hall during normal operating hours, when storm conditions permit.

Avoid using candles or other open flames for light or heat - these are a fire hazard.

Card Access. Building exterior card readers will continue to operate for about four hours after a power outage. During this time, R&DE staff will change the locks to the main entrance of each facility (the door where the DoorKing unit is present) so that they can be opened with your physical key. The interior door access systems in EVGR-A Duan Family Hall and Wilbur Soto/Trancos Houses are independently battery operated and should not be affected by a campus power outage.

Charging stations. If the power outage is prolonged, we will offer charging stations in AFDC.

Refrigeration

Please limit the times you open your freezer and refrigerator. A freezer that is left closed should maintain food safely for up to 48 hours. Safe storage times for items in a refrigerator will vary.

Refrigeration for medication available at:

Vaden between 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday through Friday
AFDC between 10-11 a.m. and 2-4 p.m. daily.

NOTE:

Medication must be placed in a labeled bag with your name (and the name of anyone authorized to pick it up)
Stanford ID or government identification are required for drop off and pick up

Weather Related Facility Issues

As water intrusion is an emergency repair condition, please report any leaks to the R&DE Emergency Maintenance Repair hotline, day or night, at 650-725-1602. If a water leak occurs in your room or building, please use a bucket or trash can to contain the water as much as possible until our maintenance team can address the issue.

Other Facility Issues

If you experience a non-emergency related facility issue, please submit a fix-it ticket. For other facility emergencies, please contact the emergency maintenance number immediately at 650-725-1602.

Dining

Power permitting, R&DE’s dining locations will be operating according to the winter schedules of the dining halls and cafés.

Students will be able to purchase food and beverages at these locations if power is available at Tresidder:

If there is a prolonged campus power outage, AFDC will be open for meals. Students will also be able to use AFDC’s dining rooms for seating space between meals and to charge their devices. Meals ready to eat (MREs) may also be distributed in place of a hot meal as necessary.

Student Support

You can reach out to your Neighborhood Resident Director (RD) for guidance on University support/resources. You can also reach out to your Undergraduate Advising Director (UAD) for academic support.

Respite

If the power outage is prolonged, AFDC will be available for respite. Wi-Fi, power, water, heat, and restrooms will be available there.

Fire-Suppression Systems

During a power outage, fire-suppression systems will continue to function. Call 911, as always, if smoke or fire is observed. R&DE staff may be seen in student residences monitoring buildings.

Follow Up Communications

Please be aware that a large-scale power outage on campus may affect internet and phone service. R&DE will communicate updates and respond to your questions to the extent possible.

In the event of a power outage or other campus emergency, updates will be provided at emergency.stanford.edu.

Safety Precautions

Your safety is important to us. Please avoid unnecessary travel during the storm. If you need to drive, check traffic reports before heading out the door. Slow down, leave extra space between vehicles and watch out for flooding on roadways. Keep both hands on the wheel and leave your headlights on. Stay away from driving or wading through standing water. Please stay away from downed power lines and assume they are energized and extremely dangerous.
