Hello Volunteer,
September kicks off our fall season and what a season it is! Collision monitoring and sanctuary work days return, and some fun activities on the coast are also brewing. See below for all the fun activities ahead for the month.

Upcoming Volunteer Opportunities

Conservation Related Opportunities
September 6 - October 30 (Daily)
Location - Downtown Houston
Time: 6:30 am til route complete
Collision Monitoring has returned along with Fall Migration! Volunteering for this project is a true community science opportunity as volunteers will be collecting data and samples for the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, relating to window strike bird deaths during peak migration. While the start time is early, this opportunity is perfect for those wanting field experience in biology, or needing conservation hours for groups like the Texas Master Naturalists. All training is provided so knowledge about birds is not required. All are welcome to help out!

Outreach and Education Related Opportunities
September 17-24
Bird Week is one of the biggest and most exciting times of the year at Houston Audubon! With multiple events happening every day of the week, we will need lots of volunteer support. To provide those interested with a full scope of the volunteer activities, we will be holding an orientation September 7th at 6:30 p.m. via Zoom. To join this orientation, register here.
Those who cannot make the orientation but still would like more information can email gdurham@houstonaudubon.org
Sanctuary Work Days
September 7th
Location - Houston Audubon Raptor Education Center (HAREC)
Time: 8 am - Noon
Join us at the Raptor and Education Center at Sims Bayou for a morning of gardening and sanctuary maintenance. We work 8AM – 12PM, once a month on the 1st Wednesday, September through June. Activities include trail maintenance, filling bird feeders and baths, litter pick-up, native gardening, and invasive species removal. It's a great way to enjoy the outdoors and help out in the community! Bring water, sunscreen, bug repellent & gloves. Wear closed-toe shoes & long pants. Bring sack lunch if desired. Children of any age are welcome with their parent/chaperone. (Minimum age without a parent/chaperone is 14 years.)

September 10th
Location - Edith L Moore Nature Sanctuary
The goal of this volunteer group is to remove invasive species like arrow root and air potato from the sanctuary to maintain habitat for our beneficial natives. If you are passionate about invasive removal, and have been looking for a way to volunteer with the sanctuary, this is the program for you! All training will be given as part of the work day so there is no orientation required.

September 24th
Location - Bolivar Flats Sanctuary
Join us on Saturday, September 24th from 9 AM to noon cleaning up the shoreline at Bolivar Flats Shorebird Sanctuary. Your efforts will help prepare the sanctuary for the thousands of migrants coming through during spring migration and help provide clean habitat for our beach-nesting birds! Houston Audubon will provide gloves, grabbers, trash bags, and water to refill your reusable containers. Please dress accordingly for the weather and sun protection.
