National Small Business Week
April showers bring May flowers is the standard saying, but April also brings Earth Day and May brings Small Business Week. It may not be as catchy a saying, but small businesses are a major part of any community. Approximately 99% of businesses in any area are considered small businesses, and there are an estimated 650,000 small businesses in Tennessee, with most of them being single entrepreneurships (SBA TN Profile). Small businesses are often where the most job growth is seen, and current trends point towards entrepreneurship growing as people have ideas on how to start and own their own business.
Every year, the Small Business Administration (SBA) and the EPA Office of Small and Disadvantaged Business Utilization (OSDBU) celebrate those that yearned to be their own boss or create a business serving as the backbone of a community. This year, National Small Business Week is April 30-May 6, with the theme “Back in Business Bigger, Bolder, and Better.” The event will highlight challenges small businesses face, the resources that are available to help, and spotlight great success stories from small businesses. To find out more about the National Small Business Week activities, visit the SBA’s National Small Business Week Site (including a free virtual summit).
At TDEC, we also feel that small businesses should be celebrated, and we try to assist to them as best we can. The Small Business Environmental Assistance Program is designed to help small businesses with any environmental questions, such as permitting, rules affecting a business, or emissions calculations. If you are a small business and need help with environmental questions, contact them today at 800-734-3619 or BGSBEAP@tn.gov. If you need assistance for something that is not environmentally related, check out SBEAP’s website for other helpful resources.
Community Corner
April was full of outreach and engagement events that our office participated in! Tennessee's 2nd annual Food Waste Awareness Week was April 10-16th. It was a week full of education around reducing food waste, and ended with regional events across the state. Earth Day was April 22nd and we participated in six different events across the state, engaging with over 1,500 Tennesseans. The department also hosted clothing drives at the Central Office, all 8 Field Offices, and Oak Ridge. From April 17 to April 21, TDEC employees donated over 2,500 pounds of gently used clothing items. Thank you to all who donated!  We enjoy going out into communities to educate on ways you can be more sustainable and a better steward of your environment!

 State Government Corner
The annual review process for the Go Green With Us recognition program has just been completed and 32 TN State Parks have been awarded Platinum for the 2022 program year. This evaluation process reviews parks’ efforts in 9 sustainability categories, including energy efficiency, maintenance and hospitality operations, water conservation, recycling and waste reduction, and more. Through this process, parks can earn Bronze, Silver, Gold or Platinum recognition levels. Parks accumulate points for completing designated tasks within the Go Green guidelines.
In the first year of the program in 2017, no park reached Platinum, and only three parks reached Gold. Six years later, continued dedication and lots of hard work led to 20 parks reaching Gold and 32 achieving Platinum recognition.
Recently, Tennessee State Parks were the recipients of the National Association of State Park Directors’ 2022 President’s Award for its Go Green With Us initiative.
Before the program launch, a Go Green Committee compiled a comprehensive guide outlining actions staff and visitors can take to effectively incorporate environmental sustainability into all aspects of park operations. During the first year of rolling out its guidelines, Go Green With Us was a voluntary program. As of October 2018, the implementation of the guidelines became mandatory for all 57 Tennessee State Parks.
Park visitors are encouraged to ask about their park’s Go Green initiative and what they can do to participate. More information about the program can be found online.
