SAFETY NEWS FOR UC SAN DIEGO RESEARCHERS

UC San Diego (excluding hospitals and clinics) will officially close for the holidays on December 23, 2022. The campus reopens January 3, 2023. Environment, Health & Safety will have minimal staff on duty and services will be curtailed during the closure.

EH&S Research Contacts during the Holiday Closure

EH&S will have minimal staff on duty to assist researchers and campus departments on the non-holiday closure days (December 27-29).

Emergency or Hazardous Material Spill Response

An EH&S staff member or Duty Officer is on call 24 hours a day, 365 days per year. To reach EH&S for urgent matters contact UCSD Police at (858) 534-HELP (4357) or 911.

Campus dispatchers will summon EH&S responders. Typical incidents include hazardous spills and reports of personal exposure to chemicals.

Hazardous Waste Collections

For biohazardous waste: The only biohazardous waste collection will occur on Wednesday Dec.29 at School of Medicine and Main Campus.

There will be no collection of chemical and radioactive waste from research facilities during the campus closure.

If your storage area requires collection service for overflow, during the scheduled holiday closure, contact EH&S staff through the UCSD Police Dispatch: (858) 534-4357. In the weeks leading up to the closure, clear as much hazardous waste from labs as possible. Labs remaining open during this period must have sufficient containers and storage space to collect wastes.

EHS Radiation Services Lab

Delivery and pickup of radioisotope packages will not be available during the holiday closure.

Behavioral Threat Assessment

If you are concerned that a person might hurt themselves or someone else, please call UCSD Police at (858) 534- HELP (4357).

Controlled Substances Program

Please note our upcoming holiday requisition deadlines and office hours. Evaluate your CS needs for the closure and plan accordingly. We will be accepting CS requisitions until the below deadlines:

CS Schedule III-V requisitions must be in by December 15
CS Schedule II requisitions should have been in by December 8
Precursor requisitions should have been submitted by November 23

Scheduled pickups of shipments are available through noon on December 21. Normal operation will resume on Jan. 3.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Needs

PPE Office is closed during the official campus closure and COVID. Online service resumes when the campus reopens.

Pest Control

Staff will be available between Dec. 27–29 at (858) 534-4534 or email ehspest@ucsd.edu.

Outside of this time contact, Campus Police for emergencies i.e., only if pests pose public safety concern and time-sensitive (rattlesnake indoors, swarm of bees in occupied area, rabid animals), isolate the area and call Campus Police.

Reporting Requirements

You must report any of the following lab incidents IMMEDIATELY:

Explosions- Any type of explosion (e.g., caused by heat, pressure, chemical, etc.), contact 911 so a EH&S Duty Officer can assist and secure the scene.
Fires - small or large. For fires call 911 or use this form if the fire department is not needed.
Bio - incident involving biological materials, e.g., accidental aerosol transmission, spills, the release of a virus, etc. Contact ehsbio@ucsd.edu.
Injury - e.g., needle sticks, chemical burns, falls, etc. Report a work-related injury, illness, or hazardous material exposure. Report Work-Related Injury or Illness within 8 hours. You may also call the UC Injury Reporting Line at 877-682-7778.
