Hello Alternative Breaks Alumni! We hope you enjoy these quarterly updates and invitations to stay involved with the AB program.
AB Kickoff 2015: Welcome to the Movement!
In October, we welcomed hundreds of new students into the Breaker movement. This year participants, experience leaders, and staff advisors will travel to 27 different communities ranging from our own backyard of Washington, D.C. to the Northwestern reaches of South America in Guatemala. Breakers will spend time engagning in educational activities, direct hands-on service, and critical reflection as they progress along the Active Citizenship Continuum. Big shoutout to Patrick Wu (AB Alum, Class of 2005!) for his keynote address that inspired a tremendous number of people!
Homecoming Leadership Reception!
Thank you to all of the Alumni who were able to make it out for the Student Affairs Homecoming Leadership Reception! We are proud to say that we had one of the biggest turnouts of all the departments within Student Affairs. We had a blast reconnecting with everyone over free food and backyard games and we cannot wait until we do it again next year!
Olga's Visit!
Olga Hazard from Finca Los Andes in Guatemala visited UMD this past October. During her visit, Olga discussed the influence of coffee on community and culture in Guatemala as well as her work with the International Women's Coffee Alliance (IWCA). After talking with current students, Olga got dinner in DC with Guatemala AB Alumni from the 2011-2015 trips. The UMD AB program has partnered with the Los Andes community for the past 7 years and we were truly grateful to have Olga visit us in College Park!
