Deuteronomy 6:4-7
Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.  Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.  These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts.  Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.
New International Version (NIV)
How did you become a disciple of Jesus Christ?  Many of us remember when we prayed to receive Christ and when we were baptized.  But how did you become a learner?   Moses told the people of God that they should teach their children to love God.

Moses’ words became a cornerstone for worship in ancient Israel.  These words were recited in homes and later in synagogues for centuries.  To this day many Jewish families recite the Shema.  This beautiful passage reminds us that we teach our families to love God by loving him right in front of them.

To this day, family discipleship is more caught than taught.  For years I had my devotional times in secret as I believe Jesus taught.  Then I realized that my kids had heard me preach and pray at the table, but they had never seen me praying for them in our home.  I heard about one young lady who awakened to her father’s voice.  She wondered who was in the house with him.  When she looked she discovered him on his knees praying for her and her siblings.   Let us love our Lord out loud in front of our families.  May they never doubt that our love for God is alive and well.  I can light the candle of another only if my own candle is burning.  If our own candles flame out, how can we give light to others?

Pray with me:
Father, help us to make disciples in our homes.  Start with each of our hearts today.  Make us apprentices of Jesus today.  Help us to love you with all that we are and have.  Then give us the grace to take our children to your throne where they, too, may come to know you in a loving relationship.  We ask it in Jesus’ name.  Amen.
This year our Every Day with Jesus readings will follow The Bible Project Read Scripture Plan.  Copies of this reading plan are available at Tallowood Baptist Church, or download
the app at readscripture.org.  Read through the Bible with us in 2019!
Joyfully,
