Psalm 70:1-5
 Hasten, O God, to save me;
    come quickly, Lord, to help me.
May those who want to take my life
    be put to shame and confusion;
may all who desire my ruin
    be turned back in disgrace.
May those who say to me, “Aha! Aha!”
    turn back because of their shame.
But may all who seek you
    rejoice and be glad in you;
may those who long for your saving help always say,
    “The Lord is great!”
But as for me, I am poor and needy;
    come quickly to me, O God.
You are my help and my deliverer;
    Lord, do not delay.

New International Version (NIV)
The pastor was pacing late into the night.  Finally, his wife interrupted his anxiety, asking, “What is wrong?”  He answered honestly, “Well.  I am in a hurry and God is not.”  So often our worries make us hurry.

David faced fierce foes when he wrote this song.  Time seemed to be running out.  So he asked God to hasten and save him.  “Come quickly,” he cried.  Then he asked God to reorient the disorientation of his world.  “May . . . May . . . May . . .”  May the malicious fail, the critics be disgraced and the scoffers be ashamed.  On the positive side, David sings, wouldn’t it be good if those who seek you would rejoice in you and those who need salvation praise you?  The clock was still ticking.  Come quickly.  Do not delay.

After crossing time zones this summer, I am still convinced that we live on GST, God’s standard time.  Summer missionaries taught me a chorus in my youth:  “Whenever you think you’ve got to worry, because it seems like the thing to do.  Remember God’s not in a hurry.  He always has time for you.  Love him in the morning when you see the sun arising.  Love him in the evening because he took you through the day.  And in the in-between times when you feel the pressure coming, remember that he loves you and he promises to stay. “
Pray with me:
Heavenly Father who stopped the sun in the sky in Joshua’s day, slow us down.  You have not guided us into an “intolerable scramble of panting feverishness.”  Reset our clocks to your time today.  Let us live this moment, this hour, this day, this life in sync with your heartbeat of love.  We pray in Jesus’ name.  Amen.
This year our Every Day with Jesus readings will follow The Bible Project Read Scripture Plan.  Copies of this reading plan are available at Tallowood Baptist Church, or download
the app at readscripture.org.  Read through the Bible with us in 2019!
Joyfully,
