Exodus 10:8-11
Then Moses and Aaron were brought back to Pharaoh. “Go, worship the Lord your God,” he said. “But tell me who will be going.” Moses answered, “We will go with our young and our old, with our sons and our daughters, and with our flocks and herds, because we are to celebrate a festival to the Lord.”
Pharaoh said, “The Lord be with you—if I let you go, along with your women and children! Clearly you are bent on evil.  No!  Have only the men go and worship the Lord, since that’s what you have been asking for.” Then Moses and Aaron were driven out of Pharaoh’s presence.

New International Version (NIV)
We call it Spark.  It used to be called “Disciple Now.”  In an intensive weekend, students gather in homes of church members to be taught the scriptures so that they grow as disciples of Jesus.  We didn’t invent this concept.  The first church did it 2000 years ago!  I love the intentionality of this weekend.  In our house Chase and Richard taught 8 amazing seventh grade boys.  Melanie and I provided the food and prayed.  What a privilege!

In the collision of wills between Pharaoh and Moses, the leader of Egypt proposed a compromise:  you may go worship in the wilderness but leave your children here.  Why take the children with you to worship?  Pharaoh was surely trying to prevent an “exodus.”  He failed.

Of all the compromises presented to us this may be the most nefarious.  “Don’t teach your kids about God.  Let them find their own way.”  One mom who chose to be an atheist was surprised to see her son pray.  She said, “When did you start praying?”  “I have always known he was there,” he confessed.  God may reach our children without us.  More likely he will use us to teach them.  Disciples are made in the home, not only on special emphasis weekends, but every day.

The children who accompanied their parents on the journey in the wilderness were the ones who actually inhabited the promised land.  The older generation never made it into the land, with the exception of Caleb.  It is a good thing they didn’t leave the children behind as Pharaoh requested.  Do not be afraid to tell the next generation the story of your love for God.  They need to hear.  The future awaits them as they put their trust in God.

Pray with me:
Father, thank you for the privilege of loving the children.  Let us teach them the truth as we show them your love.  Help them to see you in us we pray.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen.
This year our Every Day with Jesus readings will follow The Bible Project Read Scripture Plan.  Copies of this reading plan are available at Tallowood Baptist Church, or download
the app at readscripture.org.  Read through the Bible with us in 2019!
Joyfully,
