CoffeeHouses are a space to gather with colleagues. No set agenda, just coffee (or tea), snacks, and great conversation. This year, Coffeehouses will be hosted in different locations across campus. As always, coffeehouses are open to all instructors at UNCG. Consider bringing a reusable coffee mug in order to make our efforts more sustainable!

TEACHING TIPS
This section is full of timely and evidence-based practices to apply in your teaching

|
With only two weeks to go until the U.S. general election, you may be wondering how to facilitate conversations with students about current issues in a way that connects to your disciplinary content or that helps them become more informed about the voting process. This week's teaching tips provide tools and resources for teaching and supporting student learning during this year's election.
|
-
UNCG Resources. The Office of Leadership and Civic Engagement offers a wealth of resources to help educate students about the voting process and encourage participation in this civic duty. Instructors can request a Voting 101 workshop for your course by emailing lead@uncg.edu or import the Voting 101 for UNCG Students Canvas module into your course from Canvas Commons. Students, faculty, and staff can stay up to date by signing up for a once-a-week email newsletter from OLCE or following the office on Instagram (@olce_uncg). You can also share the Election Stress Kit (must login with your UNCG email to access this resource) from Counseling and Psychological Services with your students as a way to support their holistic wellbeing.

Preparing to Teach During the 2024 Election. This article provides guidance for connecting election issues to course and discipline content to support student learning and create opportunities to practice civic discourse. There are also handouts to encourage reflection and instructions for facilitating dialogues including how to intervene in “hot moments.”
-
Selecting Classroom Activities for Discussing Policy, Politics, and Social Issues. For further guidance on using the election as a teaching moment related to your discipline, review the resources in this article that provides activities, discussions, and prompts to get the conversation going. These can be adapted for any delivery format (face-to-face, hybrid/hyflex, online), so consider which activities might best align with your stated learning outcomes and try them out with your students.
