A good example of training is the way Jochebed trained Moses. She was faithful and intentional in her training of Moses (Exodus 2:2-3, 9-10). Moses wrote Deuteronomy 6:7; I think we can assume his mother trained him in the morning, throughout the day, and before he went to bed at night. What she train him in? She taught him about God and how to treat people. We can see that he chose to identify with God’s people (Exodus 2:11, 13-14; Acts 7:23); he also defended others (Exodus 2:16-17, Acts 7:24-25). Today, our children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and children in our church need to be trained in their identity in the Lord, who they are as a person, and the kinds of relationships they are to have
Another example is in the way the parents of Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah must have been trained by their parents. Their names were significant. Daniel means "God is my judge," Hananiah means "Yahweh has been gracious," Mishael means "who is what God is," and Azaraiah means "Yahweh is my help." They knew who they were even though the Babylonians attacked their identity by naming them after Babylonian gods.
Their parents prepared them by helping them know what would defile themselves (Daniel 1:8) so they were unwilling to behave in ways that would dishonor God or bow to another god. This would be like training young people to stay sexually pure and avoid substances that will destroy their bodies. The training the Hebrew children received enabled them to remain calm under pressure (Daniel 2:13-15) and resolute (Daniel 2:16-18). They also taught them the spiritual disciplines, how to pray, and read the Word, which carried them throughout their lives (Daniel 6:10).
