Hi Neighbor!

Every parent book stresses the importance of getting to know your kids’ friends. This is true from the toddler years to the college years. In honor of Halloween, my “trick” to winning the hearts of my daughter’s friends is “treating” them to delicious food.

Through the 19 years of being a mom, my signature treats have evolved. During elementary school I went for the sweet tooth: Rice Krispie treats, chocolate chip cookies, and Mickey Mouse pancakes. During high school I was known for more “refined” foods like banana peanut butter smoothies, homemade bread, and fish tacos. The most unique dish I’m known for is kugel, a Jewish dish made of sweet deliciousness…cream cheese, sugar, sour cream, noodles and cinnamon all fluffed up into a soufflé that is more a dessert than side dish. My kugel won me a special shout out during a speech at my daughter’s graduation. Truly a proud moment for me!

Now that my daughter is five hours away in college, it’s a little trickier getting to know her friends, but I’m still trying the food angle. This past weekend during a visit, we took one group to brunch and another group for wings and pizza during Sunday’s football games. We’re learning the nuance to making college students comfortable enough to share their stories of moral compromise (after all, they’re in college). There’s a balance of connecting with them without overstepping boundaries. We know that silence is golden and food doesn’t hurt either!

When our daughter was young, knowing her friends helped build a safe and solid environment for growth. Now we are just trying to appreciate the exciting person she has grown up to be. Getting to know her friends helps continue to strengthen our bond despite the time spent apart.

Happy Halloween!
Beth

Shine Holiday Lighting
Nothing says Christmas like a beautifully lit home, awash in glorious Christmas lights. A fully lit-up home throughout the Christmas season sounds like a great idea — unless you’re the one who has to do the Christmas light installation…untangling the cords, checking the bulbs and finally, getting out the ladder to string them up. Sometimes it works out great, sometimes it doesn’t — but it’s always a hassle.

Shine Holiday Lighting takes care of everything when it comes to holiday lighting. It brings the lights to you, figures out the best way to install them on your home, maintains them, and best yet, takes them back and stores them when the holiday season is over, typically after New Year’s. No dealing with those troublesome cords or burned out bulbs. In fact, Shine Holiday Lighting provides patented LED lights, and colored lights are also available.

The best time to start is now. It may seem a little early, but as Thanksgiving approaches, holiday lighting demand starts going up fast, and you don’t want to be left out in the cold.
