Make an impact this summer with Houston Audubon!
Make an impact this summer with Houston Audubon!
The heat is on in Houston, but our Trail Crew and Natives Nursery volunteers have been out each week clearing paths, tending plants, and doing the unglamorous work that keeps our sanctuaries running. For your energy and time, we are tremendously grateful!
If you've been curious about either of those programs but haven't jumped in yet, scroll to the bottom of this newsletter to submit your interest, and we would love to have you.

On the horizon: our Bolivar Birds campaign is getting underway, and we need folks to help survey and monitor shorebirds and wading birds along the upper Texas Coast!

Purple Martin Watch Parties are back this season, and they are a crowd favorite for good reason.

If you have weekday availability and enjoy working with young children, we would love to receive your application to be an Education Volunteer for the upcoming school year! It's a great way to bring younger generations into the world of birds and nature.

Details on all of the above are below. Dig in!

Hope to see you at one of our Sanctuaries soon,

Protect Birds on the Bolivar Peninsula
Bolivar Birds Beach Outreach
Fridays and Saturdays from 9 AM - 1 PM
June 19 thru September 5

This summer, Houston Audubon is raising awareness about the beach nesting birds on the Bolivar Peninsula.
To support this campaign, we will have Bolivar Birds Beach Outreach every Friday and Saturday through Labor Day weekend, from 9 AM–1 PM, and will kick things off next weekend!
Volunteers will work alongside HA staff member Casey Smith to head out onto the beach to have friendly conversations with beachgoers about how to share the shore with our beach-nesting birds.
These species, like the Wilson's Plover and Least Tern may have eggs and chicks nest right in the open sand and are incredibly vulnerable to accidental disturbance, so we want to educate others on how to share the shore while we are in their home. **No birding experience is required, just a love for the beach and coastal wildlife!** Houston Audubon will provides all the outreach materials, including some swag for doggies to make conversations more approachable.
There are 4 volunteer spots available each Friday and Saturday, and our goal is to have at least one volunteer out there every day.
We do have a special ask: Fourth of July weekend is going to bring a lot of visitors to the peninsula, and that's exactly when our Bolivar Birds need us most. If you're able to give a morning of your time on July 3rd or 4th, it would make a tremendous difference in how many beachgoers we're able to reach, and in protecting those nests during one of the busiest weekends of the summer!

Purple Martin Watch Parties

Eyes to the Skies - It's Almost Time for Purple Martin Watch Parties
Purple Martin Watch Parties will be here soon!
Outreach volunteers can support this event series by assisting with the set up and tear down of tabling materials, counting the number of attendees in the crowd, passing out purple lemonade and educational bird silhouettes, and answering folks' questions about these magical birds and their behavior.
Watch Parties will be in the evenings of July 25, August 1, and August 15. Location TBD.
An informational training packet is available for all interested volunteers, so you can feel equipped and knowledgeable even if it's your first time! Sign up through the link above.

Education Program Volunteers at Edith L. Moore

Help Us Spark a Love of Nature, Starting with the Littlest Learners!
As we look ahead to fall, Houston Audubon is seeking volunteers to support two of our early childhood education programs at Edith L. Moore Nature Sanctuary: Fledgling Friends, an engaging nature class for curious 3–5 year olds, and Stories & Crafts in the Cabin, a one-hour program of books, songs, movement, and hands-on making for that same age group.
We're looking for volunteers who can commit to attending each week of a program session — consistency matters a lot when you're working with young children. A background in early childhood education is a plus, but a genuine enthusiasm for nature and kids will take you far.
Adult volunteers will be required to complete a background check prior to their first session.
