GW Scientist and Trachtenberg School PhD Candidate Reveal Demographic Disparities in Actual Compliance with Clean Air Act Standards in Areas Designated as Compliant
GW Climate & Health Institute member and Trachtenberg doctoral student Finn Dobkin published “Demographic disparities in United States Clean Air Act PM2.5 attainment counties: assessing population living in nonattainment conditions” with GW Senior Research Scientist Dr. Gaige Kerr in Journal of Environmental Studies and Sciences. The research finds geographic disparities in exposure to particulate matter in air in regions categorized as 'in attainment' under the Clean Air Act. Created during the 1970s, the United States Clean Air Act is one of the most important mandates to regulate air quality.
Dobkin and Kerr find that despite residing within a county designated as compliant, there are about 6.73 million individuals experiencing Particulate Matter (PM2.5) levels exceeding the Clean Air Act’s standards for compliance. Analysis of the demographics of the census tracts with concerning levels of the PM2.5 air pollutant show racial inequities in pollution exposure, nationwide. Read more below.
