Spotlight on Umi Hoshijima: He Fights Off Penguins, Braves Antarctic Cold
Ecology, Evolution, and Marine Biology Ph.D. student Umi Hoshijima spends weeks at a time with his team in the bitter cold of Antarctica, where he studies pteropods, or sea butterflies. His tools of the trade are snowmobiles and diving equipment; and hazards of the job include fighting off aggressive penguins. Back in Santa Barbara, you might see him riding his bike, roasting coffee beans, or playing his gold accordion at Paseo Nuevo hoping for some change to finance his education.
