Johnson named director of Intellectual Property Law Center
Shontavia Johnson, Kern Family Chair in Intellectual Property Law, took over as director of Drake's Intellectual Property Law Center on July 1. She succeeds Ed Sease, LW'67, who served as interim director for one year. Johnson is an expert in intellectual property, entrepreneurship, and entertainment law and was recently named one of the ABA’s Top 40 Young Lawyers.
Ag Law Center to co-host Food Law Student Leadership Summit
The 2016 Food Law Student Leadership Summit will be held at Drake Law School Sept. 30-Oct. 2. Co-hosted by the Drake Agricultural Law Center, the Harvard Law School Food Law and Policy Clinic, and the Food Law Student Network Leadership Committee, the summit will bring together law students from around the country to discuss food law and policy.
Drake Law employment rate among top in nation
According to data recently compiled by Drake Law School’s Career Development Office, 86.3 percent of the Drake Law class of 2015 reported being in jobs that require bar passage or prefer a J.D. degree 10 months after graduation. This employment rate ranks 28th out of law schools nationwide and is well above the national average.
Drake Law School welcomes visiting Chinese law students
Drake Law School is currently hosting 29 Chinese law students from the Southwest University of Political Science & Law. Led by Professor Emeritus Russell Lovell, the students are learning about American law through courses taught by Drake Law faculty; meetings with local lawyers, judges, and businesses; and activities such as observing a jury trial.
Judges needed for moot court competition at Drake Law School
For the first time in six years, Drake Law School has been selected to host the regional round of the National Moot Court Competition. Drake Law alumni volunteers are needed to serve as judges for the preliminary and quarterfinal rounds of the competition on Nov. 17-18. To volunteer, complete the online form.

Drake 3L spends summer as legislative intern in Washington, D.C.
When Jenna Kirsch was in high school, she met U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley during a trip to Washington, D.C. She visited Grassley’s office and toured the Hart Senate Office Building. Eight years later, Kirsch spent the summer working in that same building as Grassley’s legislative intern.
Professor Laurie Doré makes an impact on Drake Law students
Not many Drake Law students graduate without getting to know Laurie Doré, Ellis and Nelle Levitt Distinguished Professor of Law. Now in her 24th year at Drake, she teaches required courses Civil Procedure I and II and Evidence and coaches the National Moot Court team, among her many involvements.
Drake Law alumnus works as federal prosecutor for Department of Justice
From cocaine smuggling in Puerto Rico, to crimes against humanity during the Bosnian War, to high-profile bank embezzling and health care fraud, John Michelich, LW'77, has prosecuted all types of cases during his long career in the U.S. Department of Justice.
