Legend has it that upon his return from a voyage, Christopher Columbus presented a pineapple to King Ferdinand. The pineapple was a rare and expensive fruit, a luxury enjoyed by the elite. King Ferdinand desired an abundant supply.
In pre-colonial times, pineapples made a remarkable journey. Originating in Brazil and Paraguay, they traversed Central America and the Caribbean. After the long and challenging journey from the Americas, their arrival in Europe marked them as a symbol of luxury and status.
Upon returning from voyages in the Caribbean, sea captains of New England would stake a pineapple on their fence post. This was a sign to the townspeople that the captain had returned home safely from sea, and guests were welcome.
In its evolution to crown the centerpiece, the pineapple has symbolized abundance, generosity, and hospitality. We are called to embody these traits, especially as we journey through this Advent season, attentive to the importance of hospitality and gathering, both in our homes and at the Lord's table. The invitation to gather at the Lord's table is an invitation for all to partake in His abundance. It is a moment when hospitality transcends boundaries, urging us to open our hearts and homes as those sailors once did upon their return.
As we prepare our hearts during this Advent season, may we embrace the spirit of the pineapple—standing tall in our faith and extending a gracious invitation to all. Let us reflect on how we can welcome others as Christ welcomes us, gathering around His table with joy, gratitude, and love.
