1 Kings 15:9-11
In the twentieth year of Jeroboam king of Israel, Asa became king of Judah, and he reigned in Jerusalem forty-one years. His grandmother’s name was Maakah daughter of Abishalom.
Asa did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, as his father David had done.

New International Version (NIV)
I met Asa last weekend at our family retreat.  He was the younger brother of four older sisters, part of the amazing family of our camp speaker Steve and his wife Tamber Jones.  Asa has blonde curls and blue eyes and an energetic approach to life.  Asa has fun.  In a family of five, soon to be six kids, he will surely make his mark.  In a loving family of Christ-followers, he will know the way to go.

We meet King Asa in our reading today.  The Kings of Judah, all descendants of David, each in turn decided whether or not to own their spiritual heritage.  The bad kings disowned David and the good kings followed in his footsteps.  Asa was a good king.  Rejecting the idolatry of his grandmother, Asa followed in the path of David loving God with all his heart.   In verse 14 we read that Asa’s “heart was fully committed to the Lord all his life".

Is that our story?  I work on my own family system as often as I can.  In our family tree there are Methodist, Baptist and Brethren preachers who preached the same Bible I do.  There were also some colorful characters who chose different paths.  Today, led by the Spirit, I choose to own the best of my heritage, following Christ.  God has given us the heritage of those who fear the Lord.  Will we follow in that way?  The choice is ours and the consequences will follow.  Someday our relatives will look back on our lives.  What will they see?
Pray with me:
Father, thank you for those who walked with you before us.  Help us to follow you as they did.  Let our hearts be fully committed to you for our whole lives.  Our testimonies are not safe until we get home to you. Until we see your face, let us live in your grace.   In Jesus’ name.  Amen.
This year our Every Day with Jesus readings will follow The Bible Project Read Scripture Plan.  Copies of this reading plan are available at Tallowood Baptist Church, or download
the app at readscripture.org.  Read through the Bible with us in 2019!
Joyfully,
