Acts 7: 42-48
42 But God turned away from them and gave them over to the worship of the sun, moon and stars. This agrees with what is written in the book of the prophets:
“‘Did you bring me sacrifices and offerings forty years in the wilderness, people of Israel?
43 You have taken up the tabernacle of Molek and the star of your god Rephan,
the idols you made to worship. Therefore I will send you into exile beyond Babylon."
44 Our ancestors had the tabernacle of the covenant law with them in the wilderness. It had been made as God directed Moses, according to the pattern he had seen. 45 After receiving the tabernacle, our ancestors under Joshua brought it with them when they took the land from the nations God drove out before them. It remained in the land until the time of David, 46 who enjoyed God’s favor and asked that he might provide a dwelling place for the God of Jacob. 47 But it was Solomon who built a house for him.
48 However, the Most High does not live in houses made by human hands.

New International Version (NIV)
You can buy amazing things on Amazon.  Did you know you can buy a house in an Amazon box? For $18,999, Amazon will deliver a tiny house to a piece of property. This house folds out into a 20’ by 19’ miniature house. The small, portable house offers an alternative to the many in our country who cannot afford the average home, which sells for over $300,000.

God once had a portable home in the tabernacle. The Israelites packed and unpacked it for all the years in the wilderness. In fact, the tabernacle outlived their time of wandering. It lasted until the time when Solomon became King and built the temple his father David had so desired to give to God.

Where does God live today? Does he live on the temple mount in Jerusalem? In one of the great Cathedrals of Europe? Or in one of the churches in our city? We may be sure that God can live anywhere he chooses.

God does not live in houses made by human hands. The universe itself cannot contain him. But God chooses to live in his people. We are the temple of the Holy Spirit. We have been bought at a high price. That is why we must glorify God with our bodies and our spirits which belong to him (1 Corinthians 6:19-20). What did it cost Jesus to purchase for God a house in which he may take up residence? Everything. He died for us. Will we live for him? Honestly, we can’t afford not to.

Pray with me:
Father, we thank you for choosing to live in your people. Sanctify us by your Spirit so that we may rise as a holy temple in which you may reside. Abide with us Father. Help us to abide in you. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
Our Monday through Friday devotionals will start in the book of Acts this year.  We will not hurry through the book.  We want to see what the Holy Spirit did in the early church so that we may discern what he is doing in us and through us.  Join us for these devotionals as we learn together about our King and his Kingdom in the world.

We also invite you to join us as we read through the Bible. Copies of the reading plan are available at Tallowood Baptist Church, or download your copy here:
