1 Kings 17:1
Now Elijah the Tishbite, from Tishbe in Gilead, said to Ahab, “As the Lord, the God of Israel, lives, whom I serve, there will be neither dew nor rain in the next few years except at my word.”
New International Version (NIV)
Are you looking for a leader?  What make a great one?  Even secular authors seem conflicted.  Some see great leaders as those who decisively take charge.  Others use language about serving and servants.   As believers we must never look for ultimate leadership to human beings.  God is our King.

In the first book of Kings, the writer interweaves stories of kings and prophets.  In these stories, the kings left something to be desired.  For every one of them who followed God there were several who refused.  On the other hand,  the prophets fell in two categories:  those who always told the king he was right, and those who listened to the Lord and told the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth.

Elijah fell in the latter category.  When Ahab and his wife Jezebel unleashed idolatry in the land, Elijah pronounced judgment:  no rain.  At his word there was neither dew nor rain.  If the people wanted to serve their false gods, then the one true God would get their attention.  He did.  The king went looking for the prophet.  Meanwhile, God provided for his prophet in miraculous ways.

Pray with me:
Heavenly Father, thank you for leading us into all truth.  Keep us from putting all of our hopes in any human being.  People frequently fail us but you never do.  Teach us to trust you because you alone are trustworthy.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen.
This year we focus our Every Day with Jesus readings on Jesus’ story.  With references to Tallowood's Read Through the Bible in 2018 daily reading plan, let's focus our undivided attention on Jesus and follow where he lead. He will not fail. Neither will we!

Joyfully,
