Acts 7: 39-43
39 “But our ancestors refused to obey him. Instead, they rejected him and in their hearts turned back to Egypt. 40 They told Aaron, ‘Make us gods who will go before us. As for this fellow Moses who led us out of Egypt—we don’t know what has happened to him!’ 41 That was the time they made an idol in the form of a calf. They brought sacrifices to it and reveled in what their own hands had made. 42 But God turned away from them and gave them over to the worship of the sun, moon and stars. This agrees with what is written in the book of the prophets:
“‘Did you bring me sacrifices and offerings forty years in the wilderness, people of Israel? You have taken up the tabernacle of Molek and the star of your god Rephan, the idols you made to worship. Therefore I will send you into exile beyond Babylon."

New International Version (NIV)
Once when my friend and Pastor Lester Collins was preaching in Huntsville, the little brother of our mutual friend Joshua Barrett raised up a sign which asked him, “What are you trying to say?” Every pastor needs to see that sign from time to time, because every congregation wonders.

Stephen compared Moses to Jesus. Just as the Israelites rejected Moses and refused his words, so the people of Jesus’ day rejected him. Stephen recalled that the Israelites asked for idols in exchange for the real God.

Our problem with God’s word is not the part we don’t understand, but the part we understand. What does God do when our hearts make endless idols to worship instead of him? Stephen says God turned away from Israel and gave them over to sun, moon and star worship. Later generations of Israelites would go into exile. One way to look at God’s judgment is to see that after giving us every reason to turn to him, he allows us to go where we want to go.

Someone said the eclipse yesterday was a message from God.  Some are more excited about the moon eclipsing the sun than they are about the one who made them both. What is God trying to say to us today? “Come and see. Come and drink. Come and dine.” We may worship the creation or the Creator, but not both. Will we go our own way or come home to Jesus today? Blessed are you who hunger and thirst for righteousness.  You will be filled!
Pray with me:
Father, make your word clear to us as we read it and share it with others. Turn our hearts away from idols and back to you. Today we bring all the idols we have made into the presence of the God who made us. No other god can save us. You alone are God. Help us to worship you alone. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
Our Monday through Friday devotionals will start in the book of Acts this year.  We will not hurry through the book.  We want to see what the Holy Spirit did in the early church so that we may discern what he is doing in us and through us.  Join us for these devotionals as we learn together about our King and his Kingdom in the world.

We also invite you to join us as we read through the Bible. Copies of the reading plan are available at Tallowood Baptist Church, or download your copy here:
