Increasing the Profile of your Research Program - Part Two
Happy November to everyone - Thanksgiving will be here before we know it! This month we want to continue to encourage you to think about the way you promote your research program
Our Division is home to some of the most exciting basic science research in the world right now, and discoveries made here will have lasting effects on human health for decades. We should all be extremely proud of the work we do and a little shameless self-promotion can have a meaningful impact on research funding, recruitment, and scientific reputation. Since these discoveries are happening in our labs, they can be a great vehicle for promotion of not only your research, but the efforts of your entire team. If you don’t have a lab website yet, or haven’t thought about it (read: updated it) lately, this is the post for you!
Lab Websites VUMC will host a website for your lab! This is fantastic for a few reasons: Having a VUMC domain lends legitimacy to your site, which helps with Search Engine Optimization (SEO) - You will show up higher in Google searches! VUMC’s Content Management System is called Barista. It was designed to make building and editing full-featured websites easy, regardless of your experience! There is a basic content editing guide here. To request a lab site, fill out the form here. Once you have a site, let your creativity flow! It helps to come up with an outline and a menu map, which is easy to do on paper, before getting started. You do not need to know HTML/CSS but simple tricks could certainly help. Check out W3schools for some basic tutorials or sites like Bootdey or Bootsnip for snippets that can be added to your source code. James can help too, if you get stuck or have a questions.
Your lab website should balance a healthy dose of professionalism and character. You want to showcase your research goals, accomplishments, and what makes you special. This is important for grant funding, recruitment, and your reputation. This EdgeForScholars post offers a fantastic discussion on that topic and is a must-read if you’re working on your lab site!

| Congrats to VI4 and all the labs that participated in the Second Annual MEGAMicrobe! On Saturday, October 27th, the Vanderbilt Institute for Infection, Immunology and Inflammation hosted it's second annual MEGAMIcrobe event. Despite less than optimal weather, over 200 kids came to learn about the microbial world they live in. Sixteen different Vanderbilt programs (including multiple labs from MP) were able to present simplified versions of their research areas - hopefully inspiring some bright minds for a future in science, and maybe even pathology! Congrats to all organizers, particiapants and volunteers for such a great event. You can click on the images above to see even more fun photos from MEGAMicrobe 2018.
